A man claiming to represent Governor Beckham offered Merriam Martin, an out of town brewery contact, a deal to raise the Sunday liquor lid in Lexington if Beckham received saloon support for the U.S. Senate race. Ed and Edward Goldsmith were pulled from the Licking River after drowning attempts by Katherine and their ten year old brother. George Goldsmith, a jeweler with Duhme Company in Newport, swam to the rescue, saving both children as their father arrived to emerge them from the water. The family outing ended safely with all unharmed.

He attacked Miss Ethel McClain, was captured, held by militia, and condemned within minutes. Thousands watched as the scaffold and hurried death followed, with crowds packing streets and poles.
