A Guernsey County delegation visited the McKinley residence amid floodwaters to honor Major McKinley and advocate sound money. They praised labor leaders, recalled Gen. Grant, and urged continued support for specie payments and a stable currency.
Mrs Clatter of the Gallia pike kept 1400 dollars in bills in her cellar due to distrust of banks. A flood soaked the money and she dried it with an oven. The bills were partly saved and will be sent to the sub treasury for redemption.
Romulus Cotell’s lawyers plan to file a bill of exceptions in the Circuit Court at Akron Ohio. They estimate costs at about 400 dollars and claim new evidence strengthens Cotell’s case for a second trial. The Circuit Court convenes September 21 and is expected to rule then.
A Chefo dispatch reports the commander and crew of the German cruiser Ti Tis sank bravely after the ship was lost in a typhoon ten miles north of mont, with the vessel going down. The report notes the crew met death bravely during the disaster.
West Virginia Conference of the Mormon Church holds an inaugural session at the opera house with President Rydald in the chair and Bishop Elias C. Kimball of Chattanooga present. Elder Cannon son of John I Cannon of Utah attends. others plan to establish several churches in the area after the conference ends August 3.
Anti-Saloon League in Winchester serves notices to druggists warning against selling liquor without a physician prescription. Rev A G Humphreys representing the league and M E Church pastor says the move starts a long battle. Some druggists hire lawyers and vow to pursue the case to the end.
Spirit séance at Chesterfield near Anderson reports a spirit from William Baxter claiming to be the Indiana Baxter law’s father. The entity and others present foresee free silver triumphing in the upcoming election.
Vincennes Indiana July 81 Hon Samuel W Williams has drafted an agreement to be sent to Bryan and party committees. The plan outlines a mid road fusion for President Bryan and Vice President Watson in the Populist and Democratic tickets. It details dual party ballots with elector allocations and a method to choose electoral votes.
Judge N J Dever of Common Pleas Court refused the writ of habeas corpus for Tom McKee the alleged dynamiter. McKee was returned to Marshal Watkins custody. Floyd McCormick claimed McKee, a Kentucky resident, was seized July 26 by John Bocock John M Lewis and Albert Fresch as special officers without warrant or legal process.
Judge Cantrill of the Circuit Court decides in favor of City J Thompson of Louisville. He holds that Thompson is entitled to $2 per case when examining court and that for cases spanning multiple days he earns $2 for the first day and $1 for each additional day, in a ruling with statewide impact.
In Lorain July 31 a woman, wife of Al Hardin a keeper, tried to blow out a policeman with a revolver during a quarrel of jealousy. The bullet scarred her scalp but did not penetrate the brain and she recovered.
In Chicago today the Executive Committee of the sound-money Democrats discussed Indianapolis as the convention site for August 7 and named Palmer for President with Gordon of Georgia as Vice President. Illinois factions clash over Altgeld and a separate Democratic ticket. Hanna's Chicago rooms and Western Branch meetings were described as preparations continue for the campaign.

Chicago July 31 W J Bynum rises as a potential candidate for the honest money Democratic nomination. Telegrams ask if he would lead the ticket and his activism has spurred the third party movement. With Indianapolis as his home he is viewed as an accessible candidate. Supporters say he could pull free silver votes in Indiana to help McKinley defeat Bryan.
In Kokomo Indiana on July 31 four of five front windows were demolished by a lightning strike at T R Mc Laughlin’s home. The single intact pane held a portrait of McKinley. A lifelong Republican, he vows to display McKinley in all remaining windows.
L A Sher wood, alleged Illinois bigamist, remains in Lexington awaiting Illinois governor requisition papers. He faces forgery charges for allegedly obtaining a marriage license under a false name Avery L Sherman and then changing his name after his wife declined to marry him. The case was continued and further requisition errors are being corrected.
After a six week trial in Vienna the Stenjevec gang named thirty suspects faced murder and assault charges. Nineteen members including two women were sentenced to death, nine given terms from one to twenty years, and eight acquitted.

In Portsmouth Ohio on July 31 Abe Ragland and James Cotton argued over money. Ragland struck Cotton with a brick fracturing his skull and probably fatally injuring him. Ragland was arrested.
A terrible fire in Libau, Russia, has burned since Wednesday. Libau, with a population listed between 2,000 and 30,000, is surrounded by a wall and contains a council hall, theater, hospital, extensive alms houses, and an orphan asylum.
Michael Lehmaier advertising agent died in New York after being shot by his brother in law Charles A Johnson while attempting to force entry to his wife's room Tuesday morning. The incident left Lehmaier fatally wounded and police continue to investigate.
After long consultation Secretary Hoke Smith and H H Cabaniss state the afternoon paper’s sound money edition was not yet published and no final decision made. Cabaniss claims he assumed full responsibility and did not know the Journal would become a gold paper. Smith says he knew nothing until publication approached.
In Columbus a State Journal feature asks what is best for the city. Lee Hirsch urges electing William McKinley and Garret Hobart, saying their victory will advance Columbus and lift the city from its current hole.
In Parkersburg West Virginia on July 31 10 year old Heber Hickman attempted to grab a colt by the tail as a friend rode it. The colt kicked striking him in the face and causing injuries likely to prove serious.
In Hicksville Ohio a gunman shot and critically wounded Mrs Henry Webster after forcing entry. Henry Webster grappled the attacker before a sling shot left the scene. Police suspect their son De Wayne Webster, who bears an artificial limb, linking tracks and a revolver found at the home to the crime. The motive appears to be preventing disinheritance.
A New York Journal report by Murat Halstead says Harrison and McKinley are on good terms. Harrison will spend summer in the mountains studying law and civil cases to argue next fall. He may tour Indiana Illinois and New York in September and perhaps speak in ten minute rounds during a Fifth Avenue stop. Missouri hopes for support from Interior secretary John Noble and Mark Hanna plans to mobilize New York. Hanna may depart for Cleveland soon with funds already raised to cover precinct speakers in doubtful states. Campbell Senator John McMaken Senator John Hankey and ex Representative C. C. Cole. They control about 20,000 acres secured for development.
Atlantic City July disaster leaves 47 dead and 43 injured. From the known dead list many Bridgeton residents and local workers are named, including Charles Muta, John Griver, and Edward Reading Railroad engineer, with several unidentified bodies remaining at the Excur sion House. Outcome uncertain for several victims.
Coroner McLaughlin impanels a jury to determine fault in the collision. They visit the scene as relief work finishes and bodies are moved.
