Four high ranking New York police inspectors faced trial in the Supreme Court for allegedly conspiring to keep hotel keeper George A. Sipp away from the courts. The men Dennis Sweeney James K E Hussey James I Thompson and Junr F Murtha allegedly agreed to pay Sipp 1000 for a month's absence and 100 weekly thereafter to stay away while paying 3000 to Officer Eugene Fox and supporting his family if he refused to testify. Fox confessed and testified to corroborate Sipp's charges. The defendants were denied bail and jailed in the Tombs.
In Columbus on April 29, Daisy Lehman, who runs a cigar stand, attacked E. M. Fitzwater with a buggy whip in a downtown office lobby over a dollar owed for cigars and papers. Fitzwater, a temporary registration officer, escaped unarrested.
Washington April 29 Chief Justice White announced the Supreme Court would meet May 11 but a misread memorandum showed the date was incorrect. The court now will convene on Monday May 12 and take a recess that day, as ordered.
St Paul April 29 Lou Hill announces Carmin Thompson formerly United States Treasurer has been appointed General Manager of the Great Northern and Hill ore properties with offices in St Paul. After US Steel lease ends in 1914, Hill interests will expand in mining.
In New York on April 23 the suffrage pageant committee reports overwhelming ticket demand for the May 2 Metropolitan Opera House show. The production promises a grand spectacle with men and women in dances and costumes portraying enfranchised states. Notable cast members include Mrs. Florence Fleming Noyes and Miss Portia Willis.
Special Dispatch to Commercial Tribune New York April 29 The judge awarded Ephraim Mercer a divorce with judgment against the moon and his wife Nona for infidelity citing the unlikely defense that the moon fathered their child. The courtroom erupted in laughter as the tale unfolded.
Cleveland April 29 Attorney Charles Savage as taxpayer filed suit to stop any pension for ex Police Chief Fred Kohler recently dismissed from the force. The suit argues Police Pension Board rules allowing a pension after twenty years of service are unlawful. Kohler would be eligible for 62.50 a month if pension granted.
