A masked thief stole a train to reach the location where the disturbance occurred. Police traced the suspect to a depot and recovered the engine along with several carriages. Investigators are reviewing footage and interviewing witnesses.
Report of a violent labor strike riot at Wardner Idaho where a mob of 800 to 1 000 men attacked the Bunker Hill and Sullivan Mill and depot causing $250 000 to $300 000 in damages. A picket died and another man was mortally wounded as the mob fired on its own pickets. Over 1 000 shots were fired.
The Sixth Ohio Volunteers, back from garrison duty in Cienfuegos Cuba, will be mustered out in Augusta Georgia rather than Savannah. Health concerns in Savannah prompted the shift. Muster-out will take about two weeks as rolls are incomplete, though the War Department desires a prompt discharge.
Special Dispatch to Commercial Tribune. Upper Sandusky Ohio April details describe Frank Brundage and Paul Huffman ages 12 and 18 from MacCutcheonville burned when a sealed can exploded in a bonfire. Huffman boy died and Brundage suffered severe facial and side burns.
Colonel Funston calls for volunteers to swim the river and reach Calumpit. Nearly every man in the regiment volunteers, and under heavy fire they reach the opposite shore without loss. The fall of Calumpit follows swiftly.
Berlin reports indicate the Coghlan incident at New York was treated as trivial by the German government. Privy Councillor Hammann notes no serious quarrel with Admiral Dewey and cites improved relations since last summer. He adds that Coghlan’s remarks carry no official weight and passport issues affected by British actions were managed.
Congressman Curtis of Kansas on the Monetary Committee telegraphs President McKinley urging the promotion of Colonel Funston of the Twentieth Kansas Volunteers. The move honors his gallant Philippine service during the current caucus session in Atlantic City New Jersey.
In Columbus on April 29 reports say the Kurtz faction relies on George B. Cox to organize and control the State convention. Cox’s 86 votes are expected to back a plan barring contested delegates from preliminaries, aiming to seize Credentials and seat Kurtz supporters. The strategy depends on sending contesting delegations to tilt the convention.
The Sherman reached Manila Bay at 4 30 PM and lies in quarantine. No passengers may land before noon tomorrow. The body of the late Colonel Egbert is aboard. Mrs Egbert will join on a Pacific Mail steamer.
The Rev Dr Joseph Silverman preached on lynching in Georgia and criticized U S responses. He urged a Congressional investigation into mob violence, condemned government inaction, and cited the Kuklux act as a precedent for remedial legislation.
Miss Anna G May of Laconia Ind disappeared after starting home from Louisville where she visited relatives. Her uncle Herman Wirth president of Louisville Leather Company accompanied her to the train. A $500 reward is offered for information on her whereabouts.
A powder press at Dupont's Carney's Point plant exploded during a Government torpedo experiment this afternoon, killing Amos Morris Jr, Harvey Smith, Joseph Yeager and Isaac Shant while injuring three others. Captain Stewart, a Government inspector, was among the injured.
A distinct earthquake shook Sullivan at 8 06 PM lasting about half a minute with no reported damage. In Vincennes an April 29 quake at 8 PM caused buildings to rock with chimneys and brick walls damaged and residents terrified.
Six distinct shocks rattled Terre Haute at about 8 PM with light intensity. The tremors were reported as far east as Greencastle Indiana and as far south as Henderson Kentucky. No damage occurred though the event caused excitement locally.
An earthquake was distinctly felt in Salem Indiana at 8 40 this evening lasting seven seconds in parts of town with windows rattling violently and residents reporting the tremor across the area.
The International Sunday School Convention in Atlanta April 29 chose Denver as the site for the 1902 gathering. A spirited contest among Toronto Indianapolis and Denver featured speeches by E W Halford whose address tipped the Western city’s bid. Wanamaker was named Executive Committee Chairman and Jacobs World’s Commissioner to visit Sunday schools abroad.
In Crossville Tennessee Hiram Hall was executed for the murder of his wife. His son confessed implicating Hall’s mother as the mastermind. The father, Samuel Hall, fainted at the scene and later died from the shock amid divorce proceedings planned against Hiram Hall’s wife.
An inrush of water at the Kischnar gold mine near Troizk Russia caused a shaft to collapse. Ninety five workers were in the shaft sixty two were killed and many others seriously injured.
The Herald's Manila cable says General Luna is discouraged and insurgents demoralized after the American advance. Wallace, Shields and Adams returned from Santa Tomas with hostages for the insurgent commission, praising Col Funston and American valor at the Rio Grande. Otis and Dewey refused an armistice after a second conference.
A day of talks between General Otis and Filipino envoys from General Luna ended without a ceasefire. Filipinos concede defeat and prepare fresh proposals, while American forces move supplies toward General Lawton in Marunco. The session included Schurman and Dewey and drew sharp public divisions over the peace likelihood.
