Secretary of State Bryan held two long secret conferences with California legislators to postpone alien land legislation. A bipartisan investigative commission may be formed and a special session called if needed, as Bryan aims to curb anti alien land bills and press for Japanese exclusions. Governor Johnson greeted Bryan at the depot before talks at the Capitol.
Mrs. Richard T. Crane widow of a Chicago magnate became the first woman to use a special train to obtain a marriage license in Paris. She was to wed F. T. A. Junkin Chicago railroad attorney after a chase by telegraph and motor from Italy to Paris. The license was issued and the ceremony planned for tomorrow.
New York April 28 Rev Dr Charles Augustus Briggs lecturer and writer on theology is gravely ill from heart disease at Union Theological Seminary. The 1891 controversy over his claim that reason and the church share divine authority led to charges of heresy and eventual suspension after appeals.
Dr. Briggs, author of numerous religious works and longtime lecturer at Union Theological Seminary, dies at age 72. The prominent figure contributed decades to religious study and education.
