Two men died and about a hundred passengers escaped injury when the engine and a passenger coach derailed from the tracks at Bridgeville Station and plunged into Chartiers Creek forty feet below. The dead are Marion Boyd the engineer and Frank McIsaacs the fireman. The accident occurred as the train crossed a trestle after a new schedule reduced passengers. many riders missed the train and rode in the three rear coaches where all survived. Officials planned an investigation with no statements released yet.
A Mexican dispatch reports extreme anger over a claim that the American and Mexican Legations in Guatemala City were stoned by hundreds, allegedly instigated by President Estrada Cabrera. Mexico mobilizes troops on the southern frontier to protect interests, under Brigadier General Flores with Captain Salas assisting.
New York April 28 Commander Robert E Peary warns a lack of about 60000 may force the abandonment of his planned spring dash to the North Pole. The Roosevelt is being refitted, with 100000 sought from the Peary Arctic Club and public contributions. Peary remains confident funds will materialize.
The body of Prof Thomas S Noble, 74, former head of the Cincinnati Art School for 35 years, was taken from New York to Cincinnati. An operation on Friday failed to save him. he had retired three years ago and moved to Bensonhurst with a widow, two sons, and three daughters. He was born in Lexington Kentucky and studied in Munich Paris and the United States. Noble was chosen to lead the art school by Nicholas Longworth, founder of the school.
Ben Riverman of Latonia Kentucky spent yesterday at Anderson's Ferry fishing and received congratulations for catching a sixty pound catfish.
New York April 28 The Independ ent Managers Society led by Harri son Grey Piske Ravia Belasco Henry Miller and others met to discuss the Shuberts Klaw and Erlanger merger The independents plan a formal statement tomorrow at the Lyric Theater to outline a stronger position and future plans The merger is said to affect mostly unfunded houses and will not diminish independent influence next season
Havana reports the proposed Cuban standing army of 12 000 is widely opposed. Officials doubt Cuba can recruit to U S standards, warn of fiscal and labor burdens, and fear a future ruling military caste could oppress the public after American troops leave.
In a Sixth and Stone streets duel Newton Lacy warned Officer Satters of neighbor Schwartz with a gun. Schwartz fired first, Satters returned fire wounding Schwartz. both men were hospitalized. Satters faces imminent death while Schwartz survives with nonfatal wounds.
Secretary of War Taft laid the corner stone of Dayton’s Y M C A Building at Third and Ludlow streets. He praised the organization for its businesslike operation, nonsectarian spirit, and tolerance, noting progress in Philippine affairs and cross denominational harmony.
