Washington dispatch reports Republicans in Congress will oppose Representative Babcock’s tariff revision proposals aimed at expanding the steel free list. Despite his prominence as Ways and Means chair and campaign committee head, party leaders fear his plan could trigger broad tariff openings and internal party strife before the next election.
In Jimtown Ohio Richard Grater, a house painter, is plastered with calcimine by his wife Mrs. Richard Grater after follows him to a saloon. She threatens to whitewash again if more drinks are sold. The scene ends with the saloon declaring quarantine.

L F Young presses his bid while Geiger hesitates leaving uncertainty and a split field among supporters and rivals.
Omaha April 28 The jury found James Callahan not guilty of kidnaping Edward Cudahy Jr. The judge rebuked the jury for the verdict, Callahan smiled in relief, and the jury was discharged. Police oppose rewards bonus while Crowe might claim the $5000 arrest reward.
A dog sparked a bloody confrontation three miles below Oxford Alabama on April 28. J W House and son Gus along with W N Johnson and his 14 year old son opened fire with Winchester rifles. The elder House was badly wounded after Johnson killed the dog.
Joseph Glenning of Chicago threw himself under a freight train in the Lake Shore yards at Collinwood Cleveland on April 28, ending his life.

James Douglas Reid known as The Father of the Telegraph died in New York after weeks of illness. Born in Edinburgh on March 2, 1819, he helped build lines from Philadelphia to New Orleans, worked with Morse, led the Magnetic Telegraph Company, joined Western Union in 1850, served as U S Consul to Dunfermline, and helped fund Morse statue in Central Park.
Creed Potter a 20 year old noted Kuklux member surrenders at Pikesville Pike County under guard with two relatives. He may plead guilty in Pike County to a murder charge or be returned to Letcher County to face charges. A $1000 reward remains for each outlaw in the Letcher County fight as Morgan Reynolds George Cook and John Harrison Mullins vow to resist surrender.
Indiana Governor W T Durbin returns to his hometown to attend church and says he will ignore editor Campbell and let friends stay silent. Campbell’s editorial attack draws anti Durbin letters urging continued fight as Durbin declines further comment.
Colorado Springs April 28 The Cripple Creek district has produced over 100 million dollars in gold by the end of this month. Gold was first discovered in this camp in 1889.
Two men, Phillip Kennedy aged 18 of Cooper street and John Busam aged 28 of Williamson place, drowned in Mill Creek near Spring Grove Cemetery while rowing in an old flatboat. Five men were in the craft, the boat capsized when Kennedy and Busam rose from seats causing weight to shift. Three others swam ashore. Kennedy and Busam were not recovered until after dark, their bodies taken to the morgue as Coroner Schwab was notified.
Captain Wilson Chase with the Twenty first Infantry surprised General Cailles camp at Dugout Dugout nine miles northeast of Cavinti in Laguna. The attack captured Cailles adjutant general, five staff officers, fourteen men, twenty rifles, ammo and stores, and all papers. Major Velo was killed along with Corporal McGill and Private Tipps. Pursuit of Cailles’ forces continues as Cailles had offered rewards for American heads earlier in the war.

Atlanta April 28 Governor Allen D Candler told the Associated Press that reported utterances on the negro question from Savannah papers are exaggerated. He says his remarks were substantially correct though the claim that the South does not need or want Yankee aid is false.
In Columbus Ohio on April 28 Carrie Krafts age 30 of 3154 North Front Street took carbolic acid and died. Police reported a self inflicted act driven by disappointment in a love affair.
