In the Ohio Republican primary Senator Harding defeats General Wood by 1817 votes in Hamilton County amid strong showings by Hoover and Johnson. The day also features defeats for bond issues and tight races for delegates at large with Harding leading in several districts.
Washington April 27 Presidential candidates in the National Board of Farm Organisations questionnaire express support for cooperative bargaining rural credit relief and conservation measures. Governors Lowden Hoover Wood and Senator Owen endorse farm planks while McAdoo’s reply has been published.
Complete Hamilton County returns show Republican candidates and delegates. Warren G Harding leads for President with 11,609 votes, Leonard Wood 9,792, Bower 4,695, and others. For Vice President Elwood Washington 6,091 and William Grant Webster 6,053. Delegate-at-Large totals include William Me SehreN 14,794 and others. Alternate-at-Large totals list Charles A. Cottrill 15,481 and more.
Chattanooga Tennessee April 27 Gus and Pete Tombras and Pete Mininger were indicted by a Federal Grand Jury for profiteering by selling club sandwiches at 50 cents or profit over 30 cents. M. O. Thompson faces a similar charge for selling milk at 15 cents a glass with an 11 cent profit. Indictments issued at the urging of the Federal Fair Price Committee.
William Ray a 19 year old Black man was found guilty of first degree murder in Indianapolis and sentenced to electrocution on August 5 at the Indiana State Prison Michigan City He allegedly killed 14 year old Martha Huff after enticing her to the river and stabbing her thirteen times in the throat The jury reached verdict after a brief 20 minute deliberation and Ray pleaded he did not mean to kill the girl seeking to blame passion and overpowered circumstances The case prompted tight court security to prevent mob action and Ray will be the first to die in the state electric chair
In Richmond Virginia on April 27 the entire Chatham Episcopal Institute faculty resigned after a dispute over a planned lecture praising Harriet Beecher Stowe. President Rev C O Pruden canceled the engagement and refused to reverse the order prompting resignations by Willis and other faculty members.
A Wabash River levee near Oaktown Indiana failed today flooding about 10000 acres of wheat fields with water three to five feet deep. The breach caused a temporary drop in the river and the waterway stood at twenty feet at Vincennes, with losses estimated at 500000 dollars.
Five negroes, three brothers, indicted by a Hardin County Grand Jury in Savannah Tenn for the murder of merchant Harry Alen. They are in jail at Jackson and will be brought to Nashville tomorrow under guard by State troops for trial.
In Simla on April 26 a train wreck on the Ondha Rohilkhand Railway near Moradabad east of Delhi killed fifty and wounded fifty others. Four coaches were destroyed by a fire sparked by the collision.
The House Rules Committee heard accusations that Louis F. Post, Assistant Secretary of Labor, blocked deportations of alien radicals. Lawmakers blamed Secretary Wilson for not removing him and cited over 300 cases where Post allegedly canceled or staged deportations, with some questioning legality and others citing abuse of discretionary authority.
A gun battle on a hill near White City Park in Hamilton Ohio leaves 47 year old George Lumsford dead after exchanging fire with detectives and officers. Lumsford fled the scene after firing at J W Abbott and was shot by Detective Mueller as he threatened to resist arrest. He leaves a widow and three children.
In New York on April 27 James Larkin Irish labor leader was found guilty by a Supreme Court jury after presentation of the case against him for criminal anarchy.
Washington April 27 Dr Irving Langmuir of GE Research Lab presented a new theory at the National Academy of Sciences concluding that space and time have a structure similar to matter. He term s a quantel a two part entity pervading space moving at light speed and linking to the ether of space that governs light electricity and mass.
Rear Admiral J S McKean confronted Senate Naval Investigating Committee with criticisms of Admiral Sims. The exchange between Chairman Hale and Senator Trammell grew tense as McKean defended Navy actions. He argued delays and plans cited by Sims were unfounded and noted a prewar plan existed and evolved with the war.
Atlantic City April 27 George E. Roberts vice president of National City Bank urged greater respect for private property as key to international trade. He warned seizure of enemy assets during war harms investor confidence and cited German property seizures. He also pressed for extending American capital abroad and protecting these investments. Homer L Ferguson called for time and work to restore production and curb cost of living.
Major R M Schroeder, holder of the world altitude record, reportedly suffered no lasting harm after his five mile drop during a Dayton, Ohio flight. Medical officials say his heart and organic system are in perfect condition and he may continue flying. he plans another attempt from Mitchel Field with Sergeant Clarence Coombs.
In the House of Commons Bonar Law stated the Sinn Fein policy was repudiated by the government and that secession proposals for Ireland were never considered by the Cabinet. Sir Auckland Geddes had noted the issue in a written statement to the U S embassy.
Cleveland reports early returns showing Warren G. Harding leading in delegates from city and outside precincts with Major General Leon Wood gaining ground. Akron tallies favor Harding delegates in the Fourteenth District as Pardee and Whitney push ahead. Summit County returns list delegate-at-large results with Harding and Wood near parity.
