A massive cyclone struck Kirksville Missouri at 6 20 pm amid threatening skies. The eastern city section suffered widespread destruction with about 400 buildings leveled and nearly 1000 injured. Rescue efforts amid fires and darkness continued as the death toll was expected to rise to fifty to sixty with many students among the victims.
A tornado likely the same storm that hit Kirksville struck Newtown in Sullivan County, Missouri, tonight causing extensive devastation. Reports say fifteen people were killed in Newtown and many more killed in surrounding areas as numerous buildings were blown down. Heavy damage across the town and surrounding countryside was observed.
A violent wind storm and hail in Soldier Valley wrecked the Furne home. Leslie Furne, 7, was found dead sixty feet from the house. George Furne and Mrs. George Furne suffered serious injuries. Harry Furne, 18, and several others were badly hurt. The storm caused extensive destruction and fatalities.
The ceremony at the Philadelphia Cathedral invested Mgr. James F. Laughlin with the robes of a domestic prelate of the Pontifical Court of Pope Leo XIII. Archbishop Ryan blessed the rochet and surplice before Laughlin celebrated mass. Bishop Shanley of Fargo preached the sermon.
The African Methodist Episcopal Conference in Jersey City adopted resolutions denouncing mob violence in the South. It declared lynchings out of harmony with human reason and likened lynching to the basest instincts, calling for moral restraint.
In St. Louis on April 27 the final day featured papers on Theology Church Organization and Christian Worship with discussions. The next annual congress will be held in Indianapolis.

General MacArthur's forces crossed the Rio Grande and routed rebels at Apalit. Kansas and Nebraska regiments led a cross river assault under fire, capturing 20 prisoners, a brass cannon, arms, ammunition, and a Maxim gun. One Montan and several Nebraskan units suffered casualties. 4 o’clock finish after a brutal heat and thunderstorm.
The body of Mitchell Daniel, a Black man, was found shot in the road near Leesburg Georgia. Reports indicate he and other Black residents had made inflammatory accusations against the Laramore family related to a prior mob incident and a subsequent house fire.
In Princeton Indiana on April 21 Owensville ten miles south of here is stirred by a case of what is thought to be leprosy. W A Deel twenty five has had two bouts of typhoid fever and now shows classic leprosy symptoms. A Owensville physician who diagnosed the case said indications are strong for the dreaded disease. Health officers have been notified and will conduct a thorough investigation. Owensville is filled with fear and excitement over the matter.
Pittsburg April 27 The twenty ninth assembly of the Women s Foreign Missionary Society of the Presbyterian Church reconvened with a general conference of Synodical and Presbyterian officers led by Mrs. Wm Walters. Mrs G W Brushing read a paper on Business Methods in Missionary Societies and its lengthy discussion occupied the balance of the session.
Madrid reports from Manila say Americans in Iloilo town and outskirts face daily harassment by rebels who have surrounded the area. Spaniards in Hong Kong sources claim Native hostility grows as some Americans join rebels. Aguinaldo’s wife visits insurgent posts and aids Red Cross service.
In Dayton Ohio on April 27 Bruno Kirves who killed his daughter on November 17 was found sane by a 9 to 3 jury vote in a sanity trial. He faces execution by electrocution unless later intervention occurs. He showed no emotion at the verdict and remains indifferent to the proceedings.
Burglaries hit the Davisville residence of George Creel in Parkerburg area. About 4 am $400 in cash and jewelry were taken from a sleeping room. A wooden safe with $2,200 in gold was left untouched. Chloroform suspected. bloodhounds failed to follow the trail. Local suspicion falls on known Creel hoarders.
Special Dispatch reports Samuel Gompers, president of the AFL, abandoned efforts to settle the strike at the American Plate Glass Company plant in Alexandria. He failed to secure interviews with President Kahn or Manager Mack. Strikers remain determined to uphold union principles. management plans no restart before August 1, expecting difficulty in replacing workers with nonunion labor.
The body of Mrs. John Weisner, East Greenville postmistress, exhumed after a coroner's order. Autopsy found all organs normal, contradicting the reported apoplexy. Authorities believe narcotic poisoning caused death and Dr. Kimber, her son-in-law who administered medicine, has disappeared.
General Lawton’s column reaches Norragaray after days of jungle and swamp travel. Troops will rest three days then press west with Summers’ Oregon and Minnesota Regiments, cooperating with MacArthur. Ambulances carry wounded toward the railroad as rumors say regulars may replace volunteers after Calumpit.

Former Midway banker Wm Shipp was freed at the Kentucky Penitentiary gate after serving a sentence for making false entries. Sheriff Wilhey rearrested him at the gate and escorted him back to Midway to face indictments for a similar offense.
