Chicago April 25 The Associated Press set a long distance telegraph record with a 6001 mile continuous circuit from New York to the Pacific and Chicago to New Orleans. Forty-one operators copied from a sender in New York serving thirty eight papers in leading cities. The circuit covered Philadelphia Pittsburg Cincinnati Atlanta Memphis St Louis Kansas City Omaha Denver San Francisco and numerous intermediate points.
Ernest Otto, 67, of Columbus Ohio, hanged himself in a coal shed after learning his son joined the Fourth Infantry and went to Manila. He used a clothesline tied to the rafters, ending a period of melancholy.
Sister Hyacintha, born Mary Nugent, a Dominican nun and teacher at the Academy of St. Marys of the Springs in Columbus, collapsed after learning of Bishop Watterson's death. She suffered a paralytic stroke and died, to be buried in nun’s garments.
In Columbia City last night William Mason, mentally disturbed, slashed his throat and stabbed himself repeatedly in front of hundreds. He warned friends of his plan and bade them goodbye before slashing. A physician was told he would exit the world with no consent. Dozens tried to stop him but he fought them off until exhausted. He will not recover.
The Oquendo’s big gun is on display in Portsmouth Ohio railroad yards as authorities plan a guard of honor. A public exhibition event begins with the gun shown to the crowd in the city, with organizers preparing escort details for its transfer.
