Paris dispatches report Greece refusing interposal yet seeking direct talks with Turkey as Britain, France, Germany, and Italy lean toward an armistice. London notes a closing window for peace, while Greek losses at Larissa and attritional moves frustrate both sides, with public calls for restraint and a sobering view of Turkey's fighting strength.
In Pittsburg on April 1 three people died in streetcar incidents. John R. McKelvy, 27, son of former White Lead Trust president John H. McKelvy, was struck on Forbes Street near Pride by a Consolidated Traction car. Later, Christian Wachter's horse bolted when a traction car approached Greenfield Avenue, killing Mrs. Wachter and their two year old child. Wachter and the other child were injured.
A night long storm across about a hundred square miles around Eufaula I T caused farms under water and widespread crop destruction. The North Canadian Railroad Bridge suffered major damage stopping trains for at least a day. Several washouts closed routes and ferryboats were washed away leaving lines of communication cut. A tornado south of town destroyed houses and killed cattle with full losses still unknown.
Special dispatch reports among Atkinson friends that after returning from New York he plans to marry a Clarksburg widow. The governor, a widower with four children, did not confirm or deny the tale. In New York, Atkinson declined to be interviewed tonight.
In Athens April 3, reports show a gloomy war outlook with dignified endurance among Greeks. Wounded soldiers seek healing to rejoin the colors while rumors claim Turks burned Greek wounded in a Kurtzivoli church. Retreated to Pharsalia, Greeks doubt the Crown Prince Constantine's orders not to attack were wise, and Turkish cavalry aided Edhem Pasha.
In Lexington Kentucky Herbert Muir recounts a Covington distiller fishing tale on a clear stream. A frog bait lures fish while the man dozes drinking in a wicker flask. The frog surfaces from sunning, the angler fires, breaks the line, and loses his only hook as the frog dives away.
In Glasgow Junction last night Bob Locke and Al Maddox argued over farm provisions. Maddox struck Locke with a scythe blade, severing the head and crushing the skull with the securing bolt. Maddox is jailed.
George Stimson leaped from a buggy when a south bound freight train bore down near Newcastle depot. The Panhandle track lay ahead as the Lake Erie road passenger train stood northbound. The freight splintered the buggy two feet behind him, narrowly missing catastrophe.
A rainy Sunday in the lower Mississippi Delta strains Louisiana levees. Nachez shows a river rise of 0.1 foot in 24 hours while Tensas rises over a foot with heavy drift. Vidalia backwater nears Biggs crevasse. Greenville sees a 0.2 foot drop and Memphis reports a 0.1 foot fall. Cairo readings show the big stream dropping 0.9 foot to 42.7 feet above danger.
Ottumwa reports a river breach last night that flooded the river bottoms and sent several houses downstream. In some areas the water covers up to the first story of homes, leaving destruction in its wake.
The Southern vestibuled train No. 38 derailed two and a half miles north of Blacksburg South Carolina at 7 15 p m. The engine postal baggage and express cars and the front sleeper coach were thrown from the track. Engineer Pettus and Fireman Sigman were injured but not fatally. No passengers were harmed.
In Clarksburg on April 25 Luther Haymond predicted the seventeen year periodical locusts will appear across most of West Virginia west of the Alleghenies around mid May 1897 depending on weather. Historical arrival dates cited include May 15 179%, May 25 1812 May 25 1829 May 14 1846 May 25 1868 and May 17 1880 with the district reaching into eastern Ohio.
Wilmington April 2 The north bound Royal Blue Line express reached the city at 3 15 am after a horse wandered onto the Brandywine Creek trestle. The horse was struck and carried across on the pilot. If the animal had fallen and wedged in the ties the train would have plunged 100 feet to the rocks below.
The Duchess of York safely delivered a daughter at York Cottage Sandringham at 3 30 this afternoon. Both mother and child are reported well.
Lexington April 2 The marriage of Miss Lee Warren Redd daughter of County Assessor Oliver Redd to Edward Julian McNally will be celebrated on June 10. The groom to be is manager of the Postal Telegraph Company in Chicago.
Prof J D Dennison aged 73 in Haledon New Jersey attempted suicide at home Saturday to relieve his wife of his support burden.
Philadelphia April 23 United States cruiser Brooklyn remains sound after it struck the Schooner Ledge. The incident prompted checks of hull integrity and crew safety records with no injuries reported and no significant damage to the ship.
Edward S Farrow ex lieutenant US Army was arrested at Grand Central Station on requisition papers charged with conspiracy in Pittsburg Pennsylvania where he is wanted He says he gave himself up voluntarily and will likely plead to the charges arming his case with a lengthy statement accusing Mutual Reserve Fund Life Association of New York where he serves as General Superintendent of Insurance He is a West Point graduate 1876 and author of a military encyclopedia with prior trouble linked to Barnegat Bay Company
Massillon Ohio April 25 Deputy State Game Warden Dangelheisen says Chief Warden Roetinger will arrive soon to plan a statewide effort to exterminate carp in the Tuscarawas River and nearby streams. The fish will be seined and sold to farmers for fertilizer or given to applicants in need.
Edmund Cole of Harrison Township died Saturday night at his home in Portsmouth Ohio. He was elected Assessor at the recent election but could not begin work. Neighbors swore in as deputies to assess the township, a plan now canceled by his death and a new Assessor must be appointed.
Frankfort reports on April 25 indicate Senator Deboe will win the Kentucky Senate election on Wednesday. Blackburn factionalism failed to split Republicans as Deboe backers strive to unite all seventy GOP members plus two anti-tax Democrats. Rumors of a Deboe Brad ley patronage deal are denied. Senate deadlines extend pairs through Tuesday amid bereavement waivers.
The third annual convention of the Theosophical Society of America met behind closed doors at Madison Square Garden New York with delegates and members in attendance. A.H. Spencer opened proceedings. J D Buck was elected temporary chairman and Ernest T Hargrove permanent chairman. Strong communal addresses followed including Mrs Tingley and Dr Hartman.
Senator Chas M Hogg of Cadiz sold 60000 pounds of wool to N L Cutter of Hobbs Taft Co Boston at 22 cents a pound here yesterday. The average price paid by Hogg was 16 1 2 cents. Twenty two cents is the best price in four years. He stated the area and state will gain substantially from the wool price increase, with Harrison County advantaged.
E T Hawes of Paintsville was found lying on a Lexington street this morning in an unconscious condition. He appeared to have a substantial sum of money in his pocket as well as a gold watch and gold glasses, all undisturbed.

Ardmore, I T April 25 A mob of masked white men warned all the negroes in the town of Davis. The Federal Grand Jury could not identify any raiders after hearing many witnesses. No indictments were returned and the colored residents hastily left. The unrest followed a white man’s murder attributed to a Negro as the preliminary cause.
New Yorkers recently in Cuba report Ora Melton will be released tomorrow morning from Cabana confinement. Jose Ternandez and G W Aguirre to be freed early next week as Weyler continues deporting regular troops at about 500 weekly. Civilians suffer as 200,000 refugees starve in Weyler’s camps. Brice notes children dying in streets. pictures document misery.
Paris April 25 The clash between M Clemenceau and Prince de Chimay after Clemenceau’s Echo de Paris piece led to a sword duel. Both men were wounded Clemenceau with a right arm gash and Chimay with a shoulder scratch.
The Fifth Avenue Hotel hosts Ohio Republicans for Grant Day events as Governor Asa Bushnell and staff arrive. Senator Foraker and Senator-elect Hanna join, with Ohio troops, cadets, and bands arriving to parade, while Bushnell signals a post harvest convention. He confirms intends to seek renomination and predicts a Republican fall victory.
A severe earthquake rattled Cairo Illinois at 10 o clock local time lasting about twenty seconds. Large buildings swayed as residents fled to the streets in alarm. No damage has been reported so far.
The Department of State has completed its report on the French wine trade by United States Consul Chancellor at Havre. The department discredits the Consul's assertions and says the findings will appear in the May issue of the United States Consular Reports.
April 26 report from Mansillon notes a surprisingly hot Saturday with the temperature reaching 80 in the shade.
In Leavenworth Kansas on April 2 the National Soldiers Homes board voted to transfer Governor Andrew J. Smith of the Santa Monica Soldiers Home to the Pacific Branch in Santa Monica and elected Colonel J. G Rowland as Commandant of Leavenworth. Cyrus Townsend of Leavenworth was named Western Branch Treasurer succeeding Major W. B. Shockley. The transfer takes effect July 1 with a broader reorganization anticipated.
Thomas Wylie, a junior at Ohio Wesleyan University and son of Dr. Wylie of Ripley, Ohio, accidentally shot himself in the abdomen while putting away a cleaned revolver in his room. Columbus surgeons were summoned at midnight but could not locate the bullet, and his life hangs in the balance.
John Hall of Shenandoah is in critical condition after three men robbed him on April 2. They gagged him, threw him onto Lehigh Valley tracks, and a passing train cut off his left leg. Pedestrians found him. nine arrests were made by Chief Town today.
Dover April 25 A stir in legislative circles over a report that Mrs W H Acklan of Cleveland has abandoned her divorce bill on grounds bribery demands for lobby fees. Divorce Committee members say they gave full consideration and set aside other cases. Senator Pyle says an investigation will be held. Mrs Acklan has left Delaware for Washington.
Washington April 2. Condition of Rear Admiral Richard W. Meade retired and ill in Washington is not as favorable tonight. Meade has been ill here for some time.
A large procession and Congress party honor the late Hon. Wm. S. Holman at his Indiana homestead two miles east of Aurora. Citizens’ committee reception, church viewing, and a private vigil precede interment on the river bluffs overlooking Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana.
