Lexington reports a lavish 400 guest private racing luncheon and ball hosted by Mrs. Clarence LeBus at her country home to inaugurate a private racing meet. The event drew governors, society leaders from multiple cities, and well connected families, with heavy organizing credit to Mrs. LeBus.
A New York broker Charles A Henderson and his six year old daughter Catherine fled by train toward New York, after the child was allegedly abducted from her grandmother Mrs Mary Goulden of this city. The grandmother reported the disappearance and authorities expect Henderson’s arrest on arrival in New York.
In Atlanta on April 24 the defense for Mrs Callie Scott Appelbaum, charged with murdering her husband James A Appelbaum, contends he killed himself. Mrs Appelbaum, calm and eager to aid her lawyers, notes observations as witness Cohen testifies that she left the room after the first shot and was in the hall when the second fired, forming the core of the self defense narrative.
In a Jersey City courtroom Mrs. Catherine Kerrigan accuses Mrs. Archibald Mahon of kissing Kerrigan’s coachman and wrecking her marriage. Kerrigan testified of alleged affair starting in 1911 while Kerrigan served as cook for the Mahons. Kerrigan sues for desertion in a divorce suit, while Mahon’s husband is described as a strikebreaker supplier in mining disputes.
A Plutarch New York village of 200 residents faced a daytime bear wandering crisis. Dozers and fire in the Shawangunk Mountains pushed bears into streets and kitchens, triggering panic among families. A mounted posse later cleared the area, herd ing animals away with danger to residents minimal.
In Pittsburg on April 24 a school strike by students protested the retention of superintendent L L Heeter. Heeter refused to serve as investigator as seven men were named to probe alleged immorality. Leb Weil of the Voters League accepted to join the inquiry, while five others have not yet replied.
Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan travels from Washington by Pennsylvania Railroad to Sacramento California to confer with Governor and state legislators on crafting an anti alien land law aligning with US Japan treaty obligations. He aims to avoid discrimination against Japanese while seeking guidance from the President and California authorities.
Cherbourg France April 24 Leon Jean a rope maker awoke to find himself in a hospital after an apparent seventy seven day sleep. He could not be awakened on February 6 and was taken to hospital by family members. His health now appears very good.
