In the King's Bench Court Charles McCarthy an American manager of The Big Fire in New York at the Paris Exposition was awarded £1,000 damages against Mr Harmsworth's Evening News for libel claiming he beat workers and left American and English girls stranded in Paris. The syndicate financing the show failed but McCarthy protected the employees.
