Washington April 23 After twenty hours of counting the D A R elected Mrs Matthew T Scott of Illinois as president general by eight votes over Mrs William Cummings Story of New York Insurgents captured most other posts including vice president general in charge of organization Mrs Miranda B Tulloch of District of Columbia Librarian general Mrs Shorta Willis District of Columbia and several vice presidents general from various states The election remains unsettled for recording and corresponding secretaries as counts are too close to call.
The executive declares Willson holds only himself responsible for the crime and asserts the former incumbent had no role. Further proceedings are ordered to be wiped out, with indictments taken from the record.
William S. Taylor and Charles Finley, Kentucky exiles for nine years, publish a statement from Indiana claiming they sought a fair trial and blame Governor Wilson for blocking it. Taylor plans Indiana practice. Finley to visit Kentucky. Peter Fenelon Collier founder and publisher of Collier's Weekly died suddenly of apoplexy at the Riding Club in New York. Educated in Cincinnati, he was born in Carlow Ireland and studied at St Marys College before a career devoted to publishing. He belonged to multiple clubs and societies including the Ohio Society in New York and the New York Historical Association.
Theodore Roosevelt reached the Kapiti Plains hunting grounds and spent his first night under canvas near the railroad station. The Roosevelts party travels with 260 followers and a large camp with European tents, a welcoming by Sir Alfred Pesse, and Roosevelt riding the engine cowcatcher for 79 miles. Lions prowled near the tents as good sport is anticipated in green, rain-fed country.
Lexington April 23 report says the American Tobacco company leased large tracts in West Virginia between Wheeling and Huntington and set out over 200 tobacco plant beds this season. It is said the firm will be independent of Kentucky as a white Burley producer, while Kentucky remains the largest Burley producer with over 100 million pounds annually. The company has withdrawn its country leaf department from Kentucky.
