Reports from county conventions in the Third Railroad District show strong support for A. T. Siler with Bradley for U S Senator and Augustus E. Willson for Governor, both named by multiple counties. Other names mentioned include Judge A R Burnam and Dr Franks of Owensboro, but Bradley is the sole senator choice.
In New York on April 21 a decomposed body recovered off South Brooklyn is feared to be Peter J Kennedy, noted theatrical manager who disappeared December 28. His hat and coat were found on a ferry, and his wife Beatrice Norman Kennedy identified the body at the morgue.
In Lexington on April 21 William Robinson, 35, of Stamping Ground, shot himself after believing he had killed his son in a quarrel. The incident followed a family dispute with his 16 year old daughter over a young man she favored, the son siding with his sister.
Genoa reports Captain Piccone of the Sirio, struck rocks at Hormigas Island last August and caused 300 deaths, died today of a broken heart.
Dr Charles F Aked, former English minister, takes over Fifth Avenue Baptist in New York delivering a message to Americans. He calls for reconciliation across churches and urges transforming untrained masses into Christians to shape national life. Rockefeller Jr attended Bible class and participated in evening service.
Enrico Alfano known as Er ricone, head of the Camorra, is jailed in Manhattan’s Tombs after a police raid on the East Side. He faces murder charges linked to the Naples rival Cuocola’s death and wife’s stabbing, with extradition doubts and Italian authorities urged to intervene.
Detroit April 21 The Free Press published 28 state committeemen responses on next nominees campaign issues and preferred convention site. Most favored Chicago for both parties with railroad and trust regulation and tariff revision as key topics. Republicans largely backed Roosevelt or Taft. Democrats named Bryan as first choice, with Folk or Tillman as alternatives.
Enrico Alfano known as Erricone, Camorra head, evades Italian arrest after long pursuit by gendarmes. He hides in villages near Caserta, then Rome, returns to Naples, then slips to the United States aboard a ship posing as a stoker with a false passport.
Colonel Henry Watterson and Mrs Watterson arrived in New York on the steamer Amerika. Watterson said Bryan is the only Democratic nominee candidate and that Hughes will likely succeed Roosevelt. he also claimed a ticket predicting Hughes as next president.
Havana reports prayers in all churches as Cuba endures a six month rainless period. drought scorches the land, with cattle dying and forest fires raging in several regions prompting appeals for relief.
Washington April 21 reports say President Roosevelt backs Secretary Taft in Ohio but will not support a dead candidate. Taft must show vigor or risk Roosevelt withdrawing support and letting Foraker challenge in the presidential race. Roosevelt seeks to keep options open for a future nominee and will reveal his intentions after Taft’s return.
Relatives acting as next friends in the Mrs. Mary Baker G. Eddy estate suit publish a letter to General Streeter proposing six witnesses visit Eddy at intervals to observe her condition and expedite litigation. The letter asks Streeter to assent to the plan and to allow shorthand notes. Streeter declined to comment.
Twenty five people are believed drowned when the river steamer Archangelsk struck an ice floe during a snow storm on the Neva near Irinoska. Rescue efforts recovered several passengers but many were swept away. police report thirty one missing. The vessel, old and lightly ballasted, sank within minutes. divers could not reach the wreck amid ice. Anger mounts against the owner with threats of lynching.
At Portsmouth Ohio on April 21 a faction opposed to Rev Forman Chase tried to depose him and exclude the other minister. The riot left women fainting and panicked crowds in the streets as police declined to intervene until the new minister and elders stepped in to restore order. The dispute centers on control of church property and church leadership.
A Sunday carriage ride ended fatally when a spirited horse on Carthage pike near Glenn Mary street overturned the carriage. George Feigenspan, junior of C Feigenspan & Co., died from a crushed skull. his mother, injured, is hospitalized with possible rib injuries. Feigenspan was a Thirty-second Degree Mason and Odd Fellow, with funeral plans pending.
John J. Japp of 111 Hosea avenue suffered severe bruises and a dislocated shoulder when his rig toppled on Ludlow avenue after the horse bolted. Reins wrapped around his arms dragged him several yards before bystanders and police stopped the horse. He heads a hair goods firm at Twelfth and Main.
Benedict Gimbel Philadelphia merchant who attempted suicide in Hoboken Friday night after an arrest and release on bail saw his condition worsen late tonight. He cut his throat and wrists with a broken glass pitcher, and authorities feared he could not live more than a few hours.
