Efforts to check the flames prove futile as a vast city endures death and disease threats. Historic landmarks and new monuments of the city’s progress are wiped out, leaving hundreds of thousands destitute and in urgent need of food and shelter.
Fantastic heaps burn and smoke billow around the Pinnacle of Devouring Element as ruins spread. In the background the Stan Ford residence and the Hopkins Art Institute lie burned yesterday, left of the street.
Special dispatches report San Francisco engulfed by a runaway fire. Homes of the wealthy and Van Ness corridor are doomed as flames consume districts and officials fear an entire city destruction. Relief plans and bread for victims announced.
An earthquake hit Los Angeles at 12 33 pm causing sudden panic as occupants fled buildings. No damage occurred but thousands were frightened by the tremor reported on April 19.
