National railroad strike shows signs of collapse with most workers returning to duty. In Chicago and New York districts few holdouts remain as Kingpin strife wanes. Normal passenger service and freight movement resume though isolated pockets still report disruptions.
Wealthy Dr. James Markoe was shot during the morning offering at St George's Church in Manhattan. The assailant, Thomas W. Shelley, fled but was captured by parishioners led by J Morgan Jones and Dr George E. Brewer. Markoe died at the Lying-In Hospital after the attack as Shelley gave a rambling motive filled with references to officials and mental illness.
J. J. Mantell, chairman of the Railroad General Managers Association, said a large share of striking workers in the metropolitan district reported to duty today. Railroads will fill vacancies and move freight tomorrow as the strike loses effectiveness. The Central Railroad of New Jersey called the strike over and crews will return to old jobs. Passenger traffic ran normally despite earlier union meetings after release from commitments.
Connellsville Pittsburg division trainmen voted to resume work at 7 a m, signaling a general freight resumption in Connellsville and Pittsburgh districts. Across Chicago, General Managers Association said the insurgent strike there was largely broken, with charters of locals set for revocation and leaders facing re arrest warrants.
Freight in all yards around Toledo Ohio moved rapidly as work resumed after the strike. The April 8 stoppage disrupted traffic and halted manufacturing plans but labor headquarters reported many switchmen returning to work. A few who joined the Chicago Yarimen's Association remained out but were expected to report for duty soon.
Berlin reports Max Hoelz the Plauen Communist leader captured at Marienbad and jailed at Eger after repeated arrests and escapes. His band raided Saxony and even halted the Berlin Munich express during the Kapp upheaval. Prague blocked his refuge as troops moved to bar entry.
Three armed bandits in an automobile forced Walter Vretman a building contractor to drive his car into a ditch in West Park Cleveland. They robbed him of a $5,000 diamond ring and $250 in cash and vanished. No trace of the suspects was found.
Washington reports a worldwide wheat shortage and demand surge. Bread in England reaches near the highest price workers would bear. With Russia chaotic, Europe looks to the United States Canada Australia India and Argentina for supplies.
Lucien Jenkins a black man was rushed to Lexington to avoid a mob in Danville Kentucky. He faces charges tied to an assault on six year old Willie Trimble while another white boy Keith Phillips is also held. Doctors report the child is recovering and Boyle County officials say the town is quiet.
Four auto accidents left multiple injuries in a single day. Miss Helen Burns suffered a fractured nose and facial injuries after a crash at Harrigan avenue and Epworth street involving a car driven by Harry Chameis. Alton Kathman and others were also involved. Kathman cited for reckless driving. Florence Wimmers and her son Frank were hurt when Janson’s car collided with a telephone pole at Spring Grove and Ludlow. Joseph Blims crashed into a pole on Clifton avenue. Samuel Tepper injured when his truck overturned on Madison road.
Michael Brenan of Struthers and an unidentified man were killed when an Erie passenger train struck a motorcycle near Leavittsburg three miles west of Warren, Ohio, late today.
Mexico City reports a Michoacan revolt led by Governor Pasqual Ortiz Rubio with 100 men fleeing Morelia and taking state funds. General De La Torre is ordered to Acambaro to aid Brigadier Neiro as authorities pursue Rubio and reinforce Morelia. Obregon's involvement rumored, not officially confirmed.
Martins Ferry Ohio officials report the arrest of Sarte Carie at his home two blocks from the Burkhardt residence where Mrs John Burkhardt and her daughter Lilly were found murdered. Police call him a suspect and refuse to discuss details while a crowd gathers outside the jail amid threats of violence but no expected assault on the prisoner.
Jewelry valued at 1225 dollars stolen from Ben Graham at 2493 Erie Avenue Hyde Park. Thief entered via unlocked kitchen door while family away at theater. Loss included a 1.5 carat diamond ring valued 550 dollars a 0.75 carat ring worth 250 dollars and a sapphire diamond gold band valued 350 dollars. Graham suspects a colored woman of the theft.
The Shipping Board steamship E. A. Morse en route from New York to Genoa sent a wireless distress near Sandy Hook reporting sinking condition 300 miles east. The message received by the Naval Communication Service said the vessel could stay afloat two or three hours and requested assistance.
At San Remo the Allied Supreme Council opens with questions on the Turkey peace treaty. Premiers Nitti Millerand and Lloyd George lead the talks attended by Scialcia Curzon and Berthelot. The United States will not attend. Ambassador Johnson travels via Rome due to rail strikes. Leaders regret U.S. absence, seen as temporary.
Eleven Western states suffered a major blizzard spreading from Montana into Idaho Utah New Mexico Northern Arizona Colorado Wyoming and parts of Nebraska South Dakota Iowa and Kansas. Denver faced frozen streets blocked rail freight and passenger cancellations while milk supplies faltered and telegraph service degraded.
Rosa Hirmer fourteen recalls a man behind her at a Newport moving picture theater pulling her hair and cutting off a curl with a razor. Police suspect a stranger in the seat back of hers. Physicians link the act to a mental illness pattern noted in a Dayton case years earlier.

National Hoover Headquarters orders the Ohio Hamilton County organization not to wage a primary contest for Hoover. The plan limits primary battles to California and Oregon to avoid splitting Republicans before the Chicago convention. Major Joseph C. Green says Ohio primaries are incidental and votes by write-ins will not reflect statewide Hoover strength.
New Orleans Indiana April 18 Andrew J Whitefield was acquitted by a jury on charges he murdered Dr Leopoldo Cordova former Consul General of Honduras on November 11 1919 The jury was out fourteen minutes The Cordovas were shot at a lonely spot on Dowman road about five miles from the city Cordova was killed and his wife wounded.
