Ohio Republicans prepare for the state convention in Columbus with Gen Charles H Grosvenor producing the platform notes and President McKinley expected to draft the final text. Myron Herrick is slated to head the Electoral ticket in Ohio while George B Cox may be positioned as a leading Elector-at-large.
Special Despatch reports Chicago raid at 519 Rialto Building on W. P. Fitzwilliams grain broker. Seventeen women and six men were taken into custody. Mrs. I. Inglais e claims she lost 1000 dollars to Fitzwilliams, who supposedly swindled many female patrons. Police say losses were common among his middle aged, well dressed clients who feared publicity.
In Indianapolis the Republican State Convention chose J Frank Hanly as chairman for the upcoming meeting, amid a contentious contest. Hanly allegedly received seven votes to Governor Mount's six, surprising Mount allies who had expected him to win and even prepared a speech.
Daniel C. Hadley of Monrovia near Martinsville Indiana awoke with a sense of danger and prayed. He then rode away as his horse bolted, leaped an embankment into a plowed field without injury to man horse or buggy. He says this is the second time prayer has saved him.
Max Romer a 59-year-old German resident of 1833 Belmont Avenue Chicago hanged himself today over the Dreyer Bank failure of 1897 which cost him $35000. His body was found in the burned ruins of Thielmann's summer garden.
Rev. W. E. Biederwolf of Broadway Presbyterian says confessions like Westminster have done their job and may soon be outdated. He supports Dr. Hillis' stance on faith and notes the church should focus more on character than creed, with one true confession: Jesus Christ.
In Indianapolis on April 18 the Presbytery selected delegates for the General Assembly. Named were R. E. Hawley of Edinburg, T. M. Todd of Franklin, W. C. Van Arsdal of Indianapolis, and C. C. Vannuys of Indianapolis.
The President, on Secretary Gage’s advice, will remove John R. Tolbert as Charleston Customs Collector and appoint Robert M Wallace of Sumter to the vacancy. Wallace will discharge the Deputy Collector and at least one janitor tied to storing liquor, while clerks presumed innocent remain.
King Oscar of Sweden and Norway has reached London in disguise. No official reception occurred due to his incognito status, and he traveled without ceremony.

The body of Rufus Wright, Chicago rubber maker and murder victim, was buried in Gridendale Cemetery Akron this morning. Twenty relatives, friends, and Morgan & Wright employees accompanied the funeral as Rev. James Vila Blake of Chicago gave the address and reflected on the deceased's charitable work.
Major General Otis orders the court martial of Colonel James S. Pettit Thirty first Volunteer Infantry on a war article violation. Pettit allegedly conspired with Presidente Medell of Zamboanga to capture Juan Ramos and hand him to Medell to be killed after Ramos was captured. The prisoner was killed without trial. The trial will be in Manila with Major Willard Holbrook presiding and Judge Advocate Grant prosecuting.
New Albany Indiana April 18 In Jeffersonville ten eloping couples were married within minutes by Justice John House the famous marrying Squire. One couple Emery C. Austin and Fannie Bryan were a Creole pair from Mississippi.
Washington society women plan a formal presentation for Lady Pruncefote featuring a $2,500 diamond sunburst as a highlight of the charity event. The presentation is expected in the capital drawing notable social leaders and guests.
Chicago April 18 Miss Helen Gould has signified acceptance of an invitation to the Dewey celebration. The Women's Reception Committee wonders if she should receive the same official welcome as Mrs Dewey. Frankfort dispatch reports the Circuit Court began Colson murder proceedings with a jury visit to the Capitol Hotel lobby to view a large diagram of the hotel office. Captain B B Golden described the moments before shots rang out as Colson allegedly fired first while Scott crouched behind a man, leading to a chaotic stampede and multiple gunfire exchanges.
