Lieut. Gilmore and fourteen American sailors are captured by Filipino insurgents. Admiral Dewey reports the captives’ fate is unknown as insurgents refuse to communicate. The captives belonged to the Yorktown unit sent to rescue Spanish prisoners.
A Dewey cablegram reports Lieutenant Gilmore and fourteen American sailors captured by Filipino insurgents near the Bay of Baler on Luzon. President McKinley authorizes efforts to secure exchange, with possible ransom or arms trade discussed. Reports note 2,000 insurgent prisoners held and consider use of provisional army to replace losses.

Colonel Allan T. Brinsmade, a Standard Oil commissioner, says Monnett's claim of letters from Ohio Republicans to halt the probe is boyish talk. He cannot recall writing Watson such a letter but may have written to Mr. Watson. He adds any writings would be disclosed when the Supreme Court reviews the bribery inquiry.
The transport Sherman bearing Colonel Egbert's remains left Manila April 3 and is scheduled to reach San Francisco about May 3. It is believed Mrs. Egbert may be aboard. The War Department will arrange the disposition of Col. Egbert's body per the family's wishes.
Penniless and hopeless, widow Georgiana Dworschak aged 26, behind in rent, shot herself and her two children aged 4 and 6 in Duluth Minnesota. The bodies were found today.
Bedford Indiana April 18 A Belt Railway wreck at 8 30 this morning sent engine 4 and two flat cars down a sixty foot embankment. Engineer Charles Meinzer was killed fireman Zack Duncan escaped with bruises. D J Menaugh and August Splitgerber were riding on the footboard. Menaugh was killed Splitgerber gravely injured. Conductor Henry Devault escaped with minor injuries. County Assessor J R Pope riding in a box car escaped unharmed. Cause of accident undetermined. track was reported in good order.
In Clinton Arkansas yesterday early morning a mob of about fifty masked men forced the jailer to unlock the County Jail. They shot and killed Will Harden, one of the Patterson murderers, in the jail cage, then bound the jailer and guard and departed. The coroner ruled Harden’s death by gunshot wounds from unknown assailants.
Harrisburg April 18 fourteen votes shifted from M. S. Quay to B. F. Jones in the joint ballot for United States Senator. Crawford Magee Losch Scott and others joined the anti Quay bloc, Jones connected with Jones & Laughlin, Blaine campaigner, former Republican National Committee chairman. Ballot total 247 with 124 needed. no election.
In Muncie Indiana on April 18 the Oland murder trial reveals John Petty’s possible link to the Bodenmiller case, with Petty appearing in court and the defendant testifying to his whereabouts. Parallel political notes report Pennsylvania Republicans moving to elect F B Jones as senator amid Quay opposition and a planned joint ballot. Insurance Commissioner Durham is mentioned in brief.
A Quay faction leader said at most twenty members might switch to the anti-Quay side, including those expected to defect tomorrow. He argued this would prevent electing a United States Senator and that the Legislature would adjourn Thursday noon without a successor. The would-be thief fled after the doors to the vault were shut, merchant B F Sargeant nearby forced to retreat, police seek the unknown caller with no arrests yet.
In Cagliari April 18 a school balcony collapse during a royal visit to meet the British fleet in Sassari injures fourteen children and claims three lives, plus one man. The King and Queen halt their train, visit victims, and donate 100,000 lire to aid the poor through the prefect.
Guthrie Oklahoma April 18 five thousand Indians from the Cherokee Creek and Delaware tribes leave the Indian Territory to establish a union reservation near Guadalajara Mexico. They reportedly carry a capital of four hundred twenty five thousand dollars.
The trial centered on timing of a train car crossing at Hazlett Avenue and whether Mrs. George could reach Alt House Place in time to shoot. Witnesses on the car testified it arrived Hazlett at 5:55 while the defense argued times could vary. Defense plans to finish presenting witnesses by Friday evening.
Bombay reports 134000 plague deaths with total India deaths near a quarter million since the outbreak began. Officials note underreporting, Bombay Presidency sees about 1000 deaths weekly as hot weather drives a decline. Madras largely spared. Haffkine fluid cited as effective.

London April 19 The Paris correspondent of the Daily News says the government may pardon Dreyfus after the Court of Cassation delivers judgment. He notes a ten to one majority against Hisi, with many lawmakers old or ill, worrying about influenza removing them. The government is alleged to rush proceedings to secure a decision pleasing the army and electors.
In New York Court of General Sessions Judge Blanchard dismissed the grand larceny indictment against T. C. Campbell after he fully accounted for all funds and proved the charges baseless. The decision labeled the proceedings an outrageous use of the grand jury for private ends.
Columbus Ohio April 18 Director of Public Safety Dusenbury appoints Macey Walcutt as Police Chief and Charles Lauer as Fire Chief. Mayor Swertz to abolish slot machines within forty eight hours, owners to remove them. Columbus fire underwriters discuss possible fire rate hike citing Lauer’s inexperience. one underwriter forecasts at least a two percent increase.
Massillon Ohio April 18 General Coxey says highways failed Congress and he will travel by a naphtha launch on the canal. He owns an office five miles from home and says the local roads are the worst in the county making road travel impassable.
In Portsmouth Ohio on April 18 a man and his three year old son were by the Little Scioto near Harrisonville. The child wandered away and drowned while the father Alva Wilson was washing his buggy.
The Beverly fishing schooner Eliza, skippered by Captain Hopkins, sank after striking Rose and Crown shoals near Hyannis. Fourteen crew members were aboard. eleven are missing, three survived in the dory reaching Siasconset. The wreck is total.
Washington April 18 It is reported Senator James K Jones of Arkansas will resign as Chairman of the Democratic National Committee in a few days and ex Governor Stone of Missouri probably will be chosen as his successor.
In St Paul on April 18 the Minnesota Legislature tabled Governor Lind's message by a party vote of 39 to 15. The message urged recalling the Thirteenth Minnesota Volunteers from the Philippines.
In Rome on April 18 the Pope granted an audience to the Rt. Rev. P. J. Donahue Bishop of Wheeling West Virginia reflecting ongoing church relations and official visits between the Holy See and American dioceses.
