In Kingston Tennessee on April 17 a three way pistol duel left Constable John Hickman dead and Benj Haigler mortally wounded as Will Hembree a seventeen year old shooter fled into the mountains. A posse with bloodhounds pursues him amid a region with recent lynchings.
A telegram from Hon. M. A. Hanna says he and the party accompanying his mother Mrs. Ena Hanna will arrive in Cleveland from Asheville, N C, Sunday afternoon. The funeral is set for 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at the family residence.
A Cleveland telegram says Ohio National Guard, about 6500 strong, will attend the Grant memorial ceremonies in heavy marching order. After body removal the old tomb will be razed by Contractor Brady. Ex Confederates join in the procession led by the Stonewall Band of Virginia, with former wartime members marching.
The Blakesley family living near Findlay were seized at 3 am by twelve masked burglars. John and Smith Blakesley were beaten, Mrs Blakesley and a daughter bound, torches applied to feet, and $5000 in cash plus three gold watches plundered from a bureau.
The preliminary hearing for C Linford Woods on an insurance swindling charge was held by Alderman King in Pittsburg. Woods was bound over to court in default on $2 000 bail. Edward Farrow of New York, long named in the case, did not appear. The Mutual Reserve Life Fund Association was represented by C F Harper who identified a $10 000 policy for David L Duffy and noted 30 to 40 related policies totaling about $150 000 on file at the home office.
Dispatch from Frankfort notes indictments returned against Dr. W G Hunter Republican Senate nominee ex Congressman John Henry Wilson E T Frank Noel Gaines and Thomas Tanner in a conspiracy to bribe. Bonds set for all defendants as pressure mounts over Hunter’s race prospects.
John Hunley of Athens County was pardoned from the Columbus penitentiary by the Governor after seven years for killing his father in a drunken brawl. He fled the prison in a violent tirade, cursing officials and threatening to tear up his pardon paper because it barred him from drinking liquor and denied him money for a railroad ticket.
Marion Ohio April 17 Fred Cowl arrested on a complaint by Rev Stewart C Wright pastor of Epworth M E Church for violating the closing ordinance was arraigned before the Mayor but walked out of court during legal argument and has not been found.
Parkersburg dispatch reports John Powel colored was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for killing Chuck McGill white in a June street fight at Grafton after a four day trial.
Reported as impossible for his election, Dr. Hunter faces indictment fallout with supporters urging withdrawal. Hunter refuses further comment while attorney notes possible immediate trial. Circuit Court to issue bench warrants in vacation. grand jury reportedly finished bribery probe.
