About 300 deputies guard workers with a strike wave in progress. Officials report potential resignations if conditions worsen. An associated report notes Italian residents gathering at a church in a moment of uneasy harmony amid tensions.
At the Croton Landing dam near Ithaca cost concerns and wage demands drive Italian strikers to resist outside labor. About 300 deputies guard the site as Angelo Rotella leads orates urging continued work stoppage until wage increases are granted. A New York conference with contractors, General Roe, and Sheriff Malloy could decide the outcome within 48 hours.
General Roe announces a formal demand from Sheriff Malloy of Westchester for 500 troops to move immediately to Croton Dam where Italian laborers are on strike. He plans to deploy four units from Yonkers Mt. Vernon New York and Brooklyn totaling 160 infantry and 350 cavalry to cover six miles of hilly terrain.
A New York conference to end the strike failed, troops were ordered to Croton Landing for tomorrow, and strikers gathered in the Bowery to discuss the situation. Angelo Rotolia is named among those involved.
The leader, informed that troops would depart, expresses perturbation and resolve. He says only part of his men are armed now but all will be by morning and pledges to resist contractors bringing in unfamiliar workers. He vows to fight if needed until troops arrive, claiming contractors will regret if troops leave.
Four hundred strikers in Chicago resume work after a conference between M. H. McCarthy of the Tailors and Drapers Exchange and the Journeymen Tailors Union Execu tive Committee. Wages stay the same for three years. After two years, shops may grant free shops if the majority asks. The agreement is deemed satisfactory to both sides.
The St Louis Sunday School Union plans a 10 000 child chorus to greet Admiral Dewey at a May 4 Exposition Coliseum reception from 2 to 5 p m. Tickets distributed to Sabbath schools with district and grand rehearsals lined up before the event.
The Toledo Daily Commercial is succeeded by the Toledo Daily and Sunday Times under the Toledo Times Company. Hon. H. P. Crouse is editor in chief and H. A. Boff business manager.
General Maximo Gomez arrived in Santiago de Cuba on his way to Santo Domingo. About six thousand gathered to greet him, but reception was cool as he declined the Civil Governor guests. He narrowly escaped an accident at the Nautical Club, saved from the water by onlookers. An Opera House reception was planned for tonight before his departure tomorrow.
William H. Greene was shot by a companion who mistook him for a hunting panther in the woods two miles south of Peru Indiana. The panther and two cubs have been sighted recently, with livestock missing amid a large hunt involving twenty local youths and forty farmers. The panther remains at large and Greene is in dangerous condition.
John Reinhard, partner in Reinhard & Co bank, threatens to sue Clarence M. Jones of the Press-Post for 100000 damages over alleged publications he says harmed the bank’s business and precipitated a run leading to its closing.
A colored man riding a bicycle shot into a crowd of about twenty boys in West Indianapolis injuring Clarence Vert in the hip and George Golder in the thigh. He rode away as mob pursued, bricks and clubs thrown, police failed to locate him.
Washington dispatch notes Governor Taylor of Kentucky arriving in the capital for private business and avoiding reporters. Attorney Bruce and Judge McQuown plan to seek early Supreme Court consideration of the Kentucky case. Perry Heath rumored to resign May 1 to aid the campaign while Hanna’s health limits active work. Senator Long presses for Vice Presidential bid with McKinley, facing scrutiny over the Sampson Schley dispute. Pensions for Ohio volunteers and a push to compile postwar salaries are also reported.
Judge Caldwell Yeaman sues on behalf of Perry Hubbard and Denver taxpayers to stop city officials from signing a ten year lighting contract with the New Lacombe Electric Company. The suit cites the city charter ban on long-term contracts and compares proposed rates, $95 per year from the new firm versus $85 from the existing Denver Gas and Electric Company, both offering rate relief.
Montreal April 11 The dispute between cigar manufacturers and workers spreads threatening near total factory shutdowns in Canada. J Hirsch Sons Co and L O Grothe cited for apprentice employment rules followed by a union strike. Harris Youngwhart Co and Goulet Brothers joined by locking out workers until union terms are reached. The big firms rally with a strong association backing Hirsch and Grothe.
In Lexington the Beckham faction and Democratic State officers pledge to hold firm if the Supreme Court upholds Taylor as governor. Lt Colonel Jowett Henry begins mustering partisan Democrat units, with Willard Mitchell named captain in a Nicholasville company. more companies to form in Richmond Danville Indiana Louisville this week.
Special despatch reports the B and O fast line from Chicago to Baltimore colliding with a freight near Mt Vernon on April 15. Engineer Milo Francis of the passenger No. 8 is fatally hurt, four locomotives wrecked, crew escaped. the forward engine was the injured unit and the engineer lives in Newark. Conductor William L. Francis, listed as Wellington Presidential Elector nominee, led the passenger train.
On Good Friday in Mexico City there is strong clerical indignation over a bullfight staged by Spanish clerks in local grocery stores. El Tiempo reports that religious circles and leading Spanish colonists disapprove of the young Spaniards born in and employed by Spanish merchants here.
At a St Petersburg conference on April 15 representatives from Russian banks and the Ministry of Finance stated there is no truth to rumors that Russia is preparing for war. The Credit Department director announced on behalf of Minister M DeWitte that no foundations for warlike activities exist.

Topics include irrigation rivers and harbors the Nicaraguan Canal Pacific cable merchant marine St Louis World’s Fair 1908 trade with the Orient consular service statehood railroad transport forestry beet sugar Gulf and Pacific port exports and imports home factories roads and drainage. Philippine disposition is expected to draw concern.
John M. Walker, a Kentucky migrant and 45 year old farmer, was kicked to death by two men on a Kokomo railroad track. He identified his assailants but died without naming them. No arrests have been made and seven children survive.
Rufus Wright, rubber tire magnate, died from a gun wound after a scuffle over a revolver at Mrs. Louisa Lottridge in Chicago. Wright, dying, asserted Lottridge was blameless. Police and detectives weigh accidental shooting as the likely cause. funeral planned for Akron, Ohio. Fred Morgan, Wright’s son-in-law, was present. Mrs. Lottridge's account describes a struggle over the weapon and delayed medical aid. Detective Colleran questions whether Wright held the gun at discharge.
Louise Lottridge, a Buffalo resident known as a rich and generous visitor to Fort Erie, is connected to the Rufus Wright shooting incident in Chicago. Born near Fort Erie, she moved from Black Rock and frequented racing seasons, earning a reputation as a generous “plunger” with diamonds and sealskins during her last Fort Erie visit.

A Chinese man arrested at Wu chang reportedly proclaimed himself the Emperor after jail beatings. He says he escaped from the palace where the Empress Dowager held him, and he travels incognito with documents bearing the seal of the court of Peking identifying him as the Emperor.
President Diaz and a party of sportsmen and personal friends arrived in Mexico City after a hunting expedition in Morelos. He outshot his younger companions, kept the group lively, and returned in superb health and high spirits.
About 5,000 excursionists watched George Stackey walk a high wire with a man on his back. Frederick Loomis conducted a neck suspended balloon ascent that ended with a rough landing on the bridge. Matthew Gray performed a back somersault from the channel span and was dragged from the river badly hurt with an arm fracture and possible internal injuries.
Detective Frank McBride returns to Dayton with Walter R. Groff, the Adams Express Company treasurer jailed after a San Francisco arrest. Groff admits $2,800 cash loss from racing and gambling, says he will plead guilty, and plans to start anew after surrender. He had a $200 shortage for months before leaving. Groff waived requisition papers and gave a letter to Assistant Superintendent Curtis in Columbus. He attributes downfall to gambling and race betting and says he is ashamed to reveal details to friends.
A through freight on the Southern Railway struck a mule near Huntsville Alabama and wrecked at full speed. Engineer Percy Armstrong and fireman Sandy Osborne were killed. Five crew members were seriously injured. The engine plunged down a steep embankment and caught fire. both men died in the cab. Train service on the Memphis Division was delayed twelve hours.
In Kokomo on April 15, farmer Chas. Ricer was ambushed by two masked men near a wood. They beat him and took $900 wrapped in a handkerchief from his pocket as he walked toward town.
In Lucas County near West Toledo two masked men beat and gag Joanna and Kate Sullivan and ransack their Sullivan farm home. Kate survived to alert neighbors. a bag with over $200 and the murderers escaped. The attack, described in detail by Kate before delirium, sparked a large manhunt with deputies and detectives scouring the county and threat of lynching if caught. The victims left with injuries, while Joanna died the next morning and Kate is now insane from the assault.
