An opening day crowd of over 18 000 attended at League Park as the Pirates defeated the Reds 3 to 0. Despite Cincinnati's bats, three runs by Pittsburgh and a festive atmosphere with bands and flags highlighted the gala day.
President Taft, en route to New Haven for a Yale corporation meeting, stopped in New York with Mrs. Taft and relatives to attend If I Were King at Daly's theater. He travels by private car, plans to return to New York for an evening performance, then head to Washington.
National Hickory association attendees predict new rules place red or heart hickory on equal basis with white or sap hickory and approve a bureau of inspection. In Velardena Coahuila a mob attacked the town after a religious procession ending with the burning of Judas. Fourteen rioters were executed by troops, police fled, and Father Ramon Valenzuela attempted suicide after being jailed. Many Americans live in the mining camp.
Washington April 14 The government orders seizure of Carroll Springs Distillery in Maryland after a three month inquiry into alleged internal revenue violations. Authorities claim substitution of whisky and gin, unreported barrels, and other frauds affecting government revenue, with possession to take place by special agents and inspectors.
United States tobacco growers enter the crop year with expectations of record profitability. Competing among themselves and aided by federal and state programs, American producers anticipate favorable returns for cigar wrapper tobacco, even if tariff legislation remains imperfect.
Bloodhounds from Hopkinsville joined tracks into Caldwell county to pursue a night rider suspected ringleader after the Good Spring Cumberland Presbyterian church near Fredonia was burned again. The pastor, Rev. R. A. Moore, had died recently and the church is valued at 1000 dollars. Tracks along the trail match a known man, and evidence will be turned over to the Caldwell county grand jury amid community outrage.
ST PAUL April 14 Governor Johnson signed the duti cigarette bill making it a misdemeanor to manufacture sell or give away cigarettes or cigarette papers within the state The bill exempts jobbers who do interstate business
In Columbus Ohio April 14 a series of cases will be filed before the Ohio state railroad commission and the Interstate Commerce Commission challenging nearly every rate on soft coal in Ohio and neighboring states. Coal men charge discrimination due to multiple rates for the same shipments and a controversy over the Ohio West Virginia differential. The suits mark a major effort to reform coal rate practices in the region.
Reports from Constantinople say a new cabinet under Grand Vizier Tewfik Pasha is installed, with Edhem Pasha as War Minister and Adjemin Pasha as Marine Minister. The seething capital returns to quiet as troops are withdrawn and sultan’s instructions emphasize Sheri law observance and constitutional preservation.
Pittsburg April 14. The Virginia plying Cincinnati to Pittsburg wrecked last night after striking a rock in the Ohio River near Wellsville. Fifty passengers panicked but were ferried to shore by a crew of seventy five in darkness rain and wind.
