In New York on April 13 conferences at John F. McIntyre office for Captain Peter C. Hains Jr. and his parents General Hains and Mrs. Hains Major John Hains and several witnesses led to a decision to rely solely on insanity as a defense. The trial starts Monday in Flushing Long Island where Thornton Jenkins Hains was recently acquitted in the shooting case.
A severe April gale on the upper Ohio River drove many craft adrift. The Wheeling wharfboat broke loose its chains and lines but was landed with help from the Virginia. The Queen City and Virginia faced rough seas and could not land at Steubenville and other ports.

One hundred families were left homeless as militia protected remaining belongings and relief funds were requested. The Palmer building and Berith Kodesh temple were among the structures ruined.
Fire of unknown origin at 2:30 a.m. destroyed the Kenilworth Inn three miles from Asheville. Guests escaped unharmed. The property is owned by Senator M. Gazzam of Philadelphia, built for 140000 dollars. Insurance amount not known. Asheville fire department was summoned.
One fireman was killed two fatally injured and several others hurt when a wall collapsed during a fire at the Sherwood Bros pottery plant in New Brighton Pennsylvania The deceased is George Hartman and the fatally injured are Benjamin Carr and Charles Felty. Hope Valley R I April 13 Fire destroyed the gas engine shop engine shop and storehouse of the Nichols Langworthy Machine company with damage around two hundred thousand dollars.
