A governor issued a warrant on a Missouri requisition for James Redmond wanted in Kansas City on Emma Schumacher's murder charge. Redmond, once with Roosevelt's Rough Riders, is held in San Francisco after reportedly deserting and fleeing to the Philippines. The December 1897 murder is under investigation.

In Colorado Springs on April 13 a breach of promise suit awarded Miss Lewis $50,000 from Samuel Strong. The plaintiff sought $200,000 after an eighteen hour jury deliberation. Strong, president of the Free Coinage Gold Mining Co of Cripple Creek, is valued at about $2,000,000. The 23 year old Newark Ohio native accuses him of impropriety and faces another $250,000 suit by Miss Vance.
Reports from Bloemfontein say Colonel Dalgetty s troops at Wepener repulsed a vigorous Boer assault with heavy losses. The Boers then abandoned the attack and are said to be returning northward.
Bloemfontein dispatch reports Boer forces shifting tactics. Two columns move south of Bloemfontein relying on ports for transport with minimal forage and food for immediate convoy needs as ox transports follow. Nine thousand Boers are said to be south of Dewet's corps from that point to Odendahl.
An English statement from London dated April 14 carries a dispatch by Lorenzo Marquez noting the Boers are producing shells, especially Vickers Maxim, in large quantities at the Begble foundry in Johannesburg. The report continues on the second page.
Reports from Vancouver indicate three hundred miners aboard the British steamer Alpha mutinied over advance payment for freight to Nome. The captain threatened to land the crew ashore on the north coast. miners planned to mutiny if forced to pay, aiming to sail toward the Siberian coast with provisions aboard. The Alpha had departed Vancouver despite US Revenue Service orders.

The opera house was filled with enthusiastic Central Kentucky youth and judges were Rev William Hamilton Prof E H Mark and Judge James Benton.
A grand jury in Danville Ind. returned indictments against Elwood Walker Silas Walker George Alexander Sam Lauteney William Terry Lee Bolton Benson Eggers Harry Swank Fred Staley and John Reeder for participation in the whitecapping assault on the night of March 5 when Ed and Otis Hughes were flogged.

Shelby Ohio April 13 Harry Bonnett aged two died Friday morning after swallowing a tin whistle. Physicians conducted a post mortem and found the whistle lodged in the intestines. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Will Bonnett.
Milo D. Campbell, president of the State Tax Commission, announced that not less than 100 million dollars of additional property will be placed on Michigan's tax rolls this year as a result of the commission's first year of work.
