Verne Heath former county tax assessor faced $8000 bond for concealing about 100000 in property bonds tied to the Rondout loot. Heath awaits preliminary hearing April 18 as other suspects including Wallace Davis Tom Poe and J C McKinney are held in the investigation.
Greenville South Carolina April 11 Charity Sumerel is a 109 year old inmate at Laurens County home. She quits spinning and knitting to prepare an Easter frock saying she is not trying to catch a man. She has never married and jokes that men are no good. She is in good health and has not seen a doctor in twenty years.
Columbus April 11 Governor Donahey faces possible legal issues as six cabinet members may be serving illegally for not being reappointed after his January second term. Attorney General Crabbe said their acts could be challenged in court though the governor argues they serve at the pleasure of the governor. The questioned officials are John E. Harper Cyrus Locher Wilbur E. Baker J E Monger Charles V Truax and Herve R Witter. The governor plans to seek an official opinion if reappointment is required.
In Wheaton Illinois two men and a woman testified as the Munding case continued with claims the society riding master was distracted by his fiancée Mrs Julia Able Douglass. Prosecution and defense experts prepared to argue temporary insanity at the time Munding shot Douglass.
The Monticello home of Thomas Jefferson in Virginia will be freed of debt and preserved as a public shrine under plans by the Jefferson Centennial Committee. Lieutenant Colonel Camborne Paynter of Boskennor Cornwall issued a statement denying that his daughter Elizabeth Narcissa Paynter aged 18 is engaged to Senator Guglielmo Marconi the Italian wireless inventor age 51. The report circulated in press but the family did not confirm or deny previously.
London April 11 Scotland Yard detains an unnamed man in the death of Grace Blakauler sixteen year old dancing teacher found with throat wound on steps of her mother's West Kensington home. Police sought a young Indian student earlier as a possible suspect and consider a letter received by the girl to be crucial.
Hyattsville Md April 11. Europe has been reached by underground and undersea radio. Dr James Harris Rogers, originator of the theory that long distance radio waves travel through the earth and sea rather than through the air, announced today that a message from the underground antennae of his station here had been picked up by a station in Toulon France.
Jackson April 11. The state headlines a curious tale from Attorney General Rush Knox who says Mississippi bears a burden from a circus that failed to pay $1,200 in taxes for showing at Aberdeen. He notes two elephants and two monkeys are not white yet cannot be disposed of.
Kenneth Leroy Hawkins nine years old son of Charles Hawkins residing at 4760 Spring Grove avenue was fatally injured while pursuing a nickel's worth of candy on a scooter at the Donnell street crossing Winton Place on the Baltimore and Ohio Railway tracks at 435 yesterday afternoon. Engineer August Ammon said he felt the locomotive jar and found the boy when he rushed to the rear. The child died at General Hospital. Ammon has been an engineer since 1898 and this was his first fatal accident. Fireman Herman Reis and Conductor J R McKenna were aboard the train.
Frank Dickey rushed to the Pennsylvania Railroad tracks behind his home after hearing his son Hobart scream. The boy, eight, had his right foot amputated by an eastbound freight train and remained unconscious at General Hospital. Police have no witnesses. The parent had warned the child about playing on the tracks.
Edith Perkins age four ran into the street in front of 718 Burny Street and was struck by an automobile. Henry Bamberger of 3595 Van Antwerpt Place drove her to Dr Louis Feid at 2300 West Eighth Street and then to her home.
N J April 11 Paterson police found John Serrigan a kitchen worker had written a letter to Jesse Livermore the New York broker while he was at Palm Beach. The letter claimed God would overthrow the capitalistic system and said Serrigan was chosen to lead judgment day. He refused to explain the alleged kindness Livermore did for him.
In Snow Hill Maryland on April 11 Andrew Bevans was sentenced to twenty years and Luther Bevans to fourteen years for assault and attempted killing of W W Davis jail warden and William L Plummer deputy sheriff during their escape. Chief Judge Patterson imposed the sentences, received by the prisoners without visible emotion.
Secretary Wilbur ordered six Beaufort crew members court martialed for liquor on the naval transport Beaufort that arrived at Hampton Roads on February 24. Commander D W Fuller faces negligence charges. five officers and enlisted men charged with possession of liquor. The court will convene soon at Hampton Roads base.
Mrs Mabelle Gilman Corey former wife of William E Corey and ex President of United States Steel Corpora tion suffered serious injuries near Dijon while returning from the Riviera. She tripped from a car and fell into barbed wire, receiving deep flesh wounds and eye injuries. She was taken to Dijon Hospital and then to Paris for bed rest for several weeks.
