Our troops have captured Pagsajan and Lumban and seized fifty natives. The fighting has only just begun as more men are needed to press the offensive against outposts. A separate note warns of attempted train wrecks and plague threats reaching Manila from Hongkong.
At midnight rebels severed telegraph lines between Manila and Malolos and lit signal fires. American outposts near Bigaa Bocave and Manilao suffered casualties with two locals killed and fourteen wounded and three Americans killed or wounded. Rebels damaged the railroad, but repairs allowed traffic to resume. Ninety three insurgents were reported killed during Santa Cruz actions.
A cablegram from United States Consul Wildman in Hong Kong warns that plague has appeared on the Chinese coast. The notice urges urgent medical action in Manila to prevent the disease from being imported.
Washington April 11 The War Department reports insurgents to the north of Manila have retreated into mountains and jungles along the railway and watch for a chance to seize the road cutting off McArthur's northward advance. The repulse shows they lack sufficient force to achieve their aim.
Dispatch from Manila dated April 11 reports Major General Lawton's forces at Santa Cruz defeated the enemy with ninety three uniformed dead on the field and several wounded. Lawton captured the city with minor property loss and suffered ten wounded, two fatally, while Lieutenant Elling was slightly hurt in the hand. The foe retreated eastward as Lawton gave pursuit.

The man’s funds were used to secure his release. His mother has refused to visit, though he sent letters begging her to call at the jail. Young Hall, once wealthy, murdered his wife by throwing her into a well and placing stones atop her. He narrowly escaped lynching when the crime was discovered.

Governor Tanner and Sheriff Downey clashed over troop removal in Pana Illinois. Downey admitted planning to aid union miners with deputies to eject colored residents while troops were sent to restore order. Company D from Bloomington arrived to bolster forces.
In Pana New Mexico local rioting yesterday prompted martial law and forced suspension of business. Soldiers dispersed small groups and maintained orderly flow with no resistance. Six men wounded at the Penwell colliery received medical care and were sent home.
Governor Roosevelt addressed over three thousand at Ann Arbor urging college men to lead with honesty and common sense. He praised university regimental veterans for earning our country’s gratitude and warned against machine politicians and demagogues exploiting social tensions.
John Collins and Mrs. Ann Ingersoll, charged with kidnapping Gera'd Lapiner, were released on $10,000 bonds each in Chicago. The alleged abductors face public display in a local dime museum.
Mrs. James Hutsler was fatally wounded in a confrontation with a German named Lecknan. A man is in custody amid threats of lynching from residents living near South Charleston.
Mrs. Jas Hutsler was fatally shot at her rural Springfield home near South Charleston Ohio. The suspect Karl Lecknan a German immigrant was captured near Jeffersonville and brought to Washington D H to avoid mob violence. Sheriff Wilson reported Lecknan confessed to the shooting and said he intended to kill himself. The case sparked intense anger in South Charleston with threats of lynching but no mob reached Washington D C by nightfall.
Formation at Washington D H suggests Lecknan may be moved to Columbus, though officials report little unrest tonight and no rash actions expected from residents of Columbus.
The Ohio Shiloh Battle Field Commission arrived from Shiloh Miss. to inspect sites for markers and tablets to honor Ohio regiments. Members include President R B Brown and Secretary L T Lindsay. They toured Chickamauga Park for ideas and will report to Governor Bushnell by November 15 seeking a liberal appropriation.
In Hastings Nebraska an unknown sender left a box of candy with a society woman's card. Mrs. Morey and several friends ate it and became violently ill. The card holder denied sending the sweets, leaving the incident wrapped in mystery and danger.
The Pope praised the Czar for calling the peace conference and urged moral, pacific settlement of disputes. He credited papal authority with safeguarding right over might and highlighted the church’s global mission to pacify public life and curb oppression.
Canton Ohio April 11 Mrs George testified Judge McCarty allowed her to visit Saxton before the shooting and described the injunction barring such access. Police witnesses placed her near the crime scene around 5 55 pm. Powder odor found on her hand and burrs and needles recovered from clothing and the vacant lot near the Alt house, with further testimony to follow.
The British steamer Kingswell reports collision with the Greek coaster Maria in the Mediterranean near Tripoli. The Maria sank with forty five lives lost. Kingswell, unscathed, arrived at Malta after departing Alexandria for Eupatoria last month.
United States Ambassador Joseph H. Choate sat with Justice Grantham at the Central Criminal Court as a costermonger faced a murder charge over the death of his paramour. He was greeted by the Sheriff and city officials and briefed on procedure before proceedings.
In Akron Ohio on April 11 the Cleveland Presbytery began a two day session with about 140 delegates. Retiring Moderator Rev T Y Gardner of Cleveland delivered the annual sermon and Rev P B Kennedy of Cleveland was chosen Moderator for the next year. Kennedy will resign his charge due to ill health.
Two thousand Danville miners who walked out last week decided to present the dispute to the State Arbitration Board and plan to resume work tomorrow.
William K Vanderbilt Jr and his bride Virginia Fair occupied Idle Hour at Oakdale Long Island when a cellar fire at 245 am spread to the house. Firefighters saved the occupants and 12 to 15 servants. Loss estimated 250000 to 300000. The Queen Anne brick estate stood eight years and included brick stone and terra cotta work.
A large gathering of veterinarians and cattle dealers in Wooster Ohio witnessed cattle and hogs treated for tuberculosis with tuberculine. Injections produced no lasting reaction and animals appeared healthy though Dr. D I White noted poor condition and germs persisted in the animals.
Dr. Nancy A Guilford pleads guilty to manslaughter in Bridgeport Connecticut Judge Wheeler imposes ten years imprisonment and a one dollar fine on April 11 The trial had been delayed by juror fitness issues.
Hon Frank A Durbin of Zanesville declares candidacy for Republican nomination for Governor. The move unsettles rivals in the party, with Durbin praised as honest and eloquent and seen as acceptable to both Foraker and Hanna factions. Van Voorhis confirms support from Muskingum and likely the Thirteenth District but concedes Durbin’s bid aims to unify the field.
