Despatch from Brandfort reports General Dewet’s victory over a British force at Meerkatsfontein. About 600 British soldiers killed or wounded, 900 captured with twelve wagons. Boers suffer five dead and nine wounded. Lord Roberts struggles with water shortages.
Details recount Colonel Plumer with 270 mounted men missing infantry and one Maxim gun reaching Ramathlabama near Mafeking. Boers attacked in crescent and pursued during a 10 mile retreat. Plumer wounded, several officers and men killed or missing. Captain Crewe dead. Lt Milligan fatally wounded. Bodl and Rolt wounded. General Snyman and Baden-Powell coordinated ambulances. Methuen’s relief column reportedly moving.
In Dewets Corp, British forces suffered 100 killed or wounded and 459 taken prisoner. The Transvaal Volksraad plans an ordinary session on May 10.
Advices from Mafeking say a body of armed Kaffirs left the town on April 5 and were followed and surrounded in the bush. They were shelled by a Maxim-Nordenfeldt gun and fifty one Boers stormed the Kaffirs position, killing thirty one. Skirmishes are reported at Biggarsberg.
Governor Nash indicated State Librarian Galbreath would remain in position. Letters from John R. Malloy and visits by Charles Orr E F Thomas and Frank McGrew preceded talks. The governor told the library commission members they would be confirmed and could decide Galbreath’s fate.
The President and Mrs. McKinley plan a health resort stay at Poland Springs Maine in early May. Doctors advised the air there for Mrs. McKinley and the couple intends to depart once affairs are arranged.
Four burglars forced open the Lagro general store safe with powder and fled after taking $4000. Mrs Agnew, hotel proprietor, roused the town by ringing the big hotel bell to alert residents.
Bud Lecompte shot and killed his invalid brother in law Hiram Stafford at Stafford's home near Frankfort Kentucky saying he would end his misery. He surrendered to Sheriff Suter and is jailed. It is the ninth homicide in the county since Christmas Eve in little more than three months.
Washington April 10 The Navy Department will charter a vessel to transport a large food supply mainly corn collected by Dr. Lewis Klopsch of the Christian Herald to famine stricken India. Charles Pepper urged swift action and Pay Director Deniston in New York was asked to seek terms from steamship and sailing vessel owners, with a steamer preferred.
E F Jones a stock broker with offices in the Stock Yards Exchange Building is missing. Rumors spread that he decamped with a large sum from patrons. Finley Barrett & Co said Jones failed to margin up Monday and creditors estimate he owes between 50000 and 60000.
Albert Merritt a 44 year old wealthy dry goods merchant in Kingston killed his mother by shooting her in the head and then shot himself in a fit of temporary insanity dying instantly. The tragedy emerges from his home in Kingston on April 10.
Washington April 10 Senate Privileges and Elections Committee unanimously votes to recommend that W A Clark of Montana is not entitled to his Senate seat. The two hour session featured debate over lavish spending and discarded campaign vouchers alongside questions about when Clark officially became a candidate.
Immediately after the verdict the committee announced results and then engaged in a long consultation with his client about the situation.
In Butte Montana April 10 CLarks spokesman says the Senate committee report will be adverse to Clark but he will be vindicated either in Washington or Montana The Senatorial campaign chief adds that the report will not worry him and hints at possible resignation and return to Montana for vindication adding that W A Clark sent the message amid local expectation of the outcome.
Chicago police at Central Station raided the Montana Mining, Léan and Investment Company on Dearborn street and arrested manager J. J. Facobs and clerk William Groselaus on a lottery charge. Police seized several hundred lottery tickets from the second floor offices. The concern has operated in Chicago since 1892 with large profits.
The Imperial Court of Appeals reversed the lower court ruling in the Club Des Harmlosen gambling case and ordered a new trial. Several defendants, including Bruno Von Kayser who fled to Brazil and Herr Von Kroecher now frequenting Monaco gambling resorts, are unlikely to appear.
Berlin reports that the Pope will grant an audience to a hundred German sailors from the German Mediterranean Squadron who have arrived in Rome. Commentators anticipate the Pope may urge an increased German Navy to protect Catholic missions in China.
A brawl broke out aboard No. 3 Ni W passenger train near Keystone on April 10. Miners Timothy Bostick and Charles Newsome started the fight with knives, sparking a free-for-all in which about a dozen fought while intoxicated. Several were wounded, with Mrs. Montague fatally struck by a stray bullet, Christopher Pennell and William Monroe shot, and others stabbed or shot.
The Kentucky Republican State Convention to choose delegates for Philadelphia meets May 17 at the Louisville Auditorium. Delegates are apportioned one per 100 votes for McKinley in 1896, with 2,000 expected. Governor Taylor attended, speakers praised party unity, and party rules shift to let precinct chairmen name committeemen.
Thomas M. Brown files in Princeton Indiana Circuit Court suit against four Oakland City saloonkeepers seeking 5000 damages for his son age 9 to present years of alcohol sales. He cites long term liquor access causing physical and mental deterioration and heavy fines and costs.
Edward Cox a 24 year old school teacher and son of former Commissioner W. J. Cox killed himself with arsenic after visiting McArthur. He bought arsenic for rats, attended a sweetheart’s party, and died this afternoon from the poisoning amid love disappointment rumors. He had visited the town Monday and purchased ten cents worth of poison. His death is linked to a romance heartbreak.
Private advices from St. Petersburg say the Czar and Czarina with the court will go to Moscow for Easter. The move is unprecedented and may aim to curry favor with the Old Russian party which has not shown the Czarina strong support.
A accident at a bonfire left James Moltz needing urgent care after tripping over a root and falling among embers. In trying to rescue him two other boys were seriously burned and Moltz may die.
Helm Bruce of Louisville and attorney Lewis McQuown arrived to discuss steps in the gubernatorial dispute. The Supreme Court fight appears imminent with record completion by week’s end and possible Washington travel for representatives. A habeas corpus case by R O Benjamin was heard as County Attorney Polsgrove filed a response.
More than fifty employees testified against William F. Miller in his trial. Charles Schmidt identified a November telegram directing copies to 10 000 subscribers with Miller paying telegraph charges if a subscriber failed to pay. The telegram promised a big deal and profit to send investments at once.
In Coruna Spain a room floor collapsed during a priest administering the last sacrament to a dying man. The incident left the patient dead and four others killed with fourteen injured as relatives watched.
Agoncillo the Filipino agent in Europe dismisses reports Aguinaldo hides in Manila. He argues Aguinaldo remains a serious threat to the United States and notes General Otis is tired, predicting American resolve will wane as replacements fail.
In Lebanon Indiana on April 10 R L Porter, a Tipton brick contractor, assaulted Senator Artman after Artman accused the defendants of using soft bricks. Porter struck Artman’s head and has been ordered to appear in court for contempt.
Mary Spitzier Ligerhouse aged 93 in South Bend. She was daughter of the first white woman born in Ohio west of the Miami River. Her parents were the first white couple married in Montgomery County. Grandfather slain by Indians. father and two aunts saved by mother hiding in bushes.
Berlin April 10 reports Emperor William has approved plans to restore the ancient Roman Castle Saalburg near Wiesbaden. After restoration it will serve as a museum for Roman antiquities.
A man stabbed a nonunion worker and resisted officers during a subsequent arrest attempt. Authorities reported the incident occurred at a city street confrontation and led to the suspect being taken into custody without further immediate injury.
At Washington Indiana April 10 a mob of 40 to 50 coal miners terrorized the town. They beat and stabbed Dick Gray a nonunion worker and forced the arrest of Frank Jennings who was later freed by a hostile mob. Sheriff McCord organized a posse to disperse the crowd. The Cabel Company said strikers who join the union would be kept at work but not recognized as union men.
In Chicago on April 10, clashes at the Western Electric Building on Jefferson and West Harrison streets left several nonunion workers injured. Strike supporters hurled paving stones as they battled with bosses and police, driving workers from pits and then returning to renew the assault. Four nonunion men named Strom Hagen Swanson and Foster were severely beaten as they left work.
In Mamaroneck Westchester County a riot broke out between striking laborers and men hired to fill their jobs on local improvements. Pasquale Marstriccio was fatally wounded and Genario Petto was shot twice in the leg. The violence reportedly began when a padrone brought in a new Italian gang from Mount Vernon and opened fire with a shotgun after strikers refused to disperse.
A Freight Handlers' Union meeting adjourned after passing resolutions abolishing contract work. A unanimously adopted resolution to end Sunday work was paired with a new wage scale. Under the new scale hour men receive thirty cents straight and thirty-five cents overtime.
Trostburg Md April 10 A general strike of all miners in the George's Creek region has been ordered for tomorrow midnight. Nearly 5,000 men are involved demanding an increase of 56 to 60 cents per ton of 2,240 pounds.
United States Consul Hay in Pretoria reports after searching the consulate files there is no evidence to support ex Consul Macrum s charge that official mail was tampered with He states there has been no interference with any official communications either telegraphic or by mail passing between the Department of State and the Consulate.
