The crowd in attendance exceeded 3,000 if not for the weather.
Barbara Crawford of Morrow County Ohio becomes a county charge while visiting Mr and Mrs James Baldwin in Marion. Her son Joseph sought to take her home, but Baldwin relatives refused, leading to a habeas corpus writ and her custody by Sheriff as the case awaits hearing. The son offers to care for her without county support.
Mrs. John Miller of near Bremen died after a week of illness. She relied solely on prayer for recovery and refused medical care, dying in great agony.
In Chillicothe Ohio on April 10 Mrs Paul Cook wife of the Prosecuting Attorney received a divorce on grounds of cruelty and failure to provide.
N Cunningham charged with forging Judge E T Hamilton’s name on a $75,000 check underwent skull surgery at St Alekis Hospital to test brain influence on sanity. The operation, trephining, aimed to prove mental imbalance from a skull section pressing on the brain. Doctors reported he is doing well and recovery possible.
A party of Ohioans from Columbus Shawnee and Hocking explored a Castalia Cave near Castalia Erie County finding an underground chamber of splendid arches and shimmering formations. General Passenger Agent Beale led the expedition which entered through a narrow opening and traveled a sixer room passage revealing a bright subterranean chamber.
In Washington D C on April 10 Ohio banker R A Robinson cashier of the Peoples and Drovers National Bank was found guilty on the first ballot of embezzlement in a case over a January 10 1889 loan from Chase National Bank New York. Nineteen indictments for similar offenses remain pending and bond of 1000 in each case was required totaling 20000. The defense argued no embezzlement and no settlement was demanded.
The Ohio River has reached a good coalboat stage of water and towboats are actively moving. By noon the harbor held about 14 feet of water and the river is rising toward 15 feet. An estimated 5,000,000 bushels will be shipped.
President McKinley and party landed at Annapolis aboard the Dolphin and were officially welcomed at the Naval Academy. Cadets formed as artillery and were reviewed by the President before returning to the Dolphin. Mrs McKinley reportedly is indisposed.
The body of General Fullerton was moved through Parkersburg West Virginia on a special train including a baggage car the private car Delaware and a Pullman sleeper. Relatives and many distinguished friends accompanied the funeral train.
Lima Ohio April 10 William West a local marble dealer has received the contract to erect a monument to Pearl Bryan at Greencastle Indiana.
In Cleveland on April 10 Mrs. F R App formerly of the city secured a North Dakota divorce. Hours later she married Worthington Butts at the West House in Minneapolis. The groom plans to relocate to California with offers from an uncle in San Francisco.
On the Dr Hill ferry near St Louis Sophia Vogel hurled her two children into the river then jumped after them. Both children were saved and revived at City Hospital while the mother drowned. The scene drew shock from passengers as fisherman Michael Bradley rescued the children. In Marion Indiana a jury was formed for L D Baldwin bribery case after 140 men were summoned. The last juror was William Peconga a Miami Indian chief descendant.
Akron citizens respond to Mississippi Valley flood distress with a carload of provisions and clothing. Governor McLaurin requests distribution details via Vicksburg contacts and the Akron Evening Journal notes grateful acknowledgment from Mississippi officials for the relief effort.
Five hundred persons and 1,500 head of livestock are starving in Indian Bay after floodwaters cover all land. A Holly Grove letter to the relief committee says supplies have not arrived and the situation grows worse as water rises. Rations for 400 people were sent on the 3d but delayed in transit.
The Evening Times benefit concert at the Grand Opera House in Louisville raised over 1800 for Mississippi Valley flood sufferers. Additional donations from local businessmen total 2250, with part already sent to the Memphis Relief Committee. The event drew a larger crowd than expected.
Bishop Walden of Cincinnati urged the Methodist Church to support aged ministers calling their need just as valid as current pastors. Speaking in Brooklyn to the New York East Conference he urged ending beggarly support and argued for sustained lifetime aid within five years.
Minnesota Beet Sugar Company formed in Minneapolis with 2 million dollar capital. Directors include two Chicago Wholesale Grocers representatives to oppose the Sugar Trust by creating a sugar beet industry in the Northwest. A 250000 dollar factory is planned at Hastings, Minnesota, with more to come. A state association was created to educate farmers.
Amos Keen Keenan, a Hicksville farmer and spiritualism believer, subjected himself to hypnosis by an Indian medium and a Ft Wayne hypnotist to study the occult. Last night his mind slipped into madness, he raved like an Indian and gave a war whoop before being taken to Toledo asylum for treatment.
Mrs Jack Gardiner of Boston and Amherst Webber visited the zoo when Webber reached through a leopard's cage. The leopard seized his arm and Mrs Gardiner pulled free the arm, saving him though his sleeve was torn and he was scratched.
English Indiana April 10 Will Hughes a farmer and two sons are dead and Mrs Hughes lies dying after eating wild parsnips at their home west of town. The incident leaves one more survivor critically ill.
Theodore Durrant was sentenced today to death for the Blanche Lamont murder at Em Church two years ago. He will be hanged at San Quentin Prison on June 11.
