Washington reports name Captain W. W. Peabody as successor to William R. Morrison as chairman of the Interstate Commerce Commission. Peabody says no formal call has been made. If offered, he may accept after consultation with the B. & O. W. and its allies.
A lamp explosion at the ruined piazza sparked a blaze that was halted by Thomas Clarke and others. Six people were injured, two in critical condition, as rescuers aided Bryan who sprained a left leg and seven others suffered cuts and bruises in the panicked collapse.
Washington rumors touch Charles W. Fisher to become Surveyor of Customs for Cincinnati replacing Henry D. Lemon and Lewis Voight to be appointed Appraiser of the Port. Fisher, 39, linked to the R S Waddell Agency and Commerce McKinley circles, resides at Walnut Hills. Mrs Leland Stanford signs a contract for life insurance of 1,000,000 dollars with premiums of 170,000 annually. If she dies within ten years the Leland Stanford Jr University will receive the policy amount, and after ten years the university would receive 2,000,000 if premiums continue.
H J Sanford was arrested in Jamestown New York while trying to negotiate the sale of $1000 in forged drafts to the Chautauqua Building and Loan Association. He is wanted in Wisconsin Illinois Indiana Ohio and Indiana on swindling charges with forged drafts and differing payee names.
Jeffersonville Indiana April 9 County Attorney Stradley reports that Sections 217 218 and 219 of the 1891 acts dealing with filing tax liens by the Prosecuting Attorney have been repealed. The emergency clause allowed immediate effect but foreclosure suits filed last month are nullified. The state faces the loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars due to the repeal.
