Naples reports Vesuvius increasing activity with strong earthquakes. Evacuations surge as Torre Annunziata and Boscotrecase vanish under lava while 30 000 residents flee toward Naples by rail streetcar and ships. Provisions for survivors tighten amid blackouts and a destruction of observatory and gas plants.
Bulletin reports governor off Columbus strain with pulse 90 temperature normal and respiration 18. He slept well through the night and Sunday morning, recognized visitors, took nourishment, and talked cheerfully. Daughters Alethia and Ernestine visited, expressing hope to return to Milford home as strength returns.
The Pittsburg River Combine towboat H M Hoxie exploded its boilers near Portland Ohio while carrying empty coal barges. Fireman John Moran drowned while others were fatally or seriously burned. Injured passengers were hospitalized in Parkersburg West Virginia. Ship owner and captain faced a sudden blast with extensive hull damage.
Sandusky Ohio April 8 Secretary W W Miller head of the State Board of Agriculture and manager of the Ohio State Fair died suddenly at his Castalia home. He left Columbus Friday seemingly in good health and was felled by apoplexy. His death removes a prominent figure in eastern and central farm circles.
A riot erupted in San Francisco after a Socialist meeting in sympathy with Moyer and Haywood. An impromptu parade formed toward the business district, stopping at Lotta's Fountain where a red banner read The constitution be damned. Police dispersed the crowd after a scuffle that left about ten injured.
Prof J W Beeson of Meridian Female College concealed and persuaded a mob of about one hundred to disperse after a negro shot Branscomb Farmer, a streetcar conductor. Beeson promised to surrender the suspect to police next day, while the wounded conductor is expected to recover.
New Albany Indiana April 8 reports say the jury in the murder trial of Rev Ulysses G Sutherlin will report a disagreement when court convenes tomorrow. The jury has been out since Saturday morning and was locked up over Sunday after no sealed verdict appeared, though no ground for a disagreement is clear.
Five survivors from the schooner W E and W L Tuck were landed at Yarmouth Nova Scotia by the spray with the body of steward Charles Wilstead who perished in the long boat after two days exposed and without food. The ship had sailed from Nene for New York with lumber when a heavy squall capsized her. The crew of six clung to the long boat until rescued. Wilstead died after hours of exposure. In Nagasaki waters the Erasmo towed in after seven months of illness decimated her crew with one death.
George W. Dwyer, 30, shot Henry J. Werbel, 46, at Werbel’s Harrison Avenue saloon after an argument about wages. Werbel died from a head wound. Dwyer fled, possibly on an outbound freight. Werbel, ex policeman and Hamilton native, had lived in Cincinnati for four weeks and was connected with local politics.
In Zion City Illinois on April 8 1903 Overseer Voliva led a mass gathering denouncing John Alexander Dowie as spendthrift liar and traitor. 6 000 attendees pledged to follow Voliva with Mrs Dowie and justice officials present amid claims of Dowie’s financial excesses and mismanagement.
