The force includes eight companies of the Fourteenth Infantry, Cavalry, Idaho Volunteers, mountain guns, and 200 sharpshooters. Soldiers transfer from canoes to gunboats at Pasig River mouth. Santa Cruz is the objective at the lake's far end.
The US transport steamer Newport docked in San Francisco on April 8 after a 29 day voyage from Manila. General Turner, born July 18, 1833 near Saratoga N Y, died in St. Louis on April 8. He moved to Chicago at age ten, entered West Point at eighteen, rose to Major General in the Civil War, and later joined business life in St. Louis. He is survived by his wife Blanche Soulard and seven children.
His appointment brings satisfaction in diplomatic circles as fluctuations in the Anglo American relationship ease.

In St Louis on April 8 John Sullivan and his daughter Minnie Dunn were found dead at 1318 Biddle Street by son William Sullivan who then locked away others and moved his mother and nephew Christy Dunn. They later recovered and police suspect poisoning but have not ruled out criminal cause. A brother Edward and other relatives were arrested.
In Moscow on April 8 a servant stabbed General Mauzoy in the throat as he served the Czar's aide de camp. The assailant was overpowered and Mauzoy's wounds are not serious.
Anonymous letters threaten the Andrews household amid a fatal blaze believed incendiary. Police surveil Foley the butler and name Mary Flannagan as a central figure in a revenge driven plot against Mrs. St John and the Andrews children. The letters warn of violence and disfigurement unless Mary is punished.
Washington expects the ratifications of the Spain United States peace treaty signed at Paris will occur in the capital next week. A proclamation by President McKinley will follow, announcing the end of the war and renewed friendly relations. The Spanish copy signed March 17 is due to arrive Monday, with formalities for the exchange to be completed promptly. Secretary Hay has been notified. the treaty is on the high seas near New York. The ratifications will be followed by a $20,000,000 payment to Spain for the Philippine Islands cession.
Franklin County sources say the Franklin Grand Jury has acted and an indictment may be filed against Charles E. Sommers of Hardin County. Garnett Graves alleges Sommers paid him 400 for a convention bribe, a move that caused a political uproar at the Democratic convention hall. Sommers supporters deny charges, arguing factional persecution within the party.
