In Columbus the Haas electrocution failed after tests and a burnt coil halted the process. Governor Bushnell granted Haas a respite to April 21, delaying the death sentence while officials and experts assess the machinery and legality amid broader questions about electrocution.
Convict No 28717 Hans Haas spends a calm day in the Columbus annex awaiting execution. He shows no emotion or concern, eats a simple breakfast, and makes few remarks about his fate. He asks for no favors and avoids attention, remaining stoic as bells ring and visitors come and go.
Dispatch from Wellston Ohio reports the Knights of Labor National Assembly 135 meeting with National Master Workman E Burley in attendance. Leaders Andrew D t and William Klusmeier arrive as the group considers a voluntary defense fund funded by local secretaries and guarded from use for a year. Four candidates vie for Secretary-Treasurer including three from Ohio and one from Kansas.
Frankfort today reports Representative Thompson of Louisville circulating a petition for a new caucus. The move could force a decision by Senator Jones and widen rifts among Blackburn, Boyle, and Martin factions.
Cal Atkinson, the tollgate keeper shot by raiders in Mercer County Kentucky, remains in serious condition with an arm in a sling a bandaged hand and a patch over one eye. He fears future violence from the assailants while the tollhouse lies empty and the road is clear.
V Holiday wed Alice M Kelley in the jail parlor after a hearing on obtaining money by false pretenses. He said the ceremony linked him to Bug Holliday of the Cincinnati Ball Club, a claim he disputes. Holiday paid debts with a check from his St Louis-based father and left for Detroit with his wife.
Ed Wilson, wanted in Chicago for robbing a messenger of Kuh Nathan Fisher on April 2 1897, was seen at the Big Four Depot in Delaware Ohio. A Chicago message offered a $509 reward, but Wilson disappeared before officers could act. He is 21, 5 feet 4.5 inches, 132 pounds, tight complexion, smooth face, gray eyes, dark blonde hair, round shouldered.
Ohio Afro-American delegates meeting at the State Library appoint Bishop B. W. Arnett as President and N. T. Gant as Vice President. George H. Jackson becomes Secretary and Dr. C. H. Ferguson Treasurer while Rev. W. G. Anderson oversees exhibits. They plan to present Ohio progress in arts education and industry at the Tennessee Centennial Afro-American department.
Canton court awards $150 in a $50,000 suit as Wm. R. Day and Judge Frease defend the defendant. MP Day may travel to Cuba representing the President and State Department.

Bond forger 5, lodged by detectives, lies in precarious condition in Rabana. He has refused to eat since arrival and says newspapers have told all. Lewis to be arraigned Monday with bond and trial time fixed. rumors of bond efforts dismissed.
In Akron Ohio on April 7 invitations were sent for the wedding of Nellie Nieberg daughter of Mr and Mrs George Nieberg to Cleveland attorney George W Jones son of Dr G J Jones The ceremony had not occurred and guests learned the couple were married in Cleveland February 18 1895 Rev S C Applegarth performed the ceremony with Ida Jones as sole witness The news reached the groom's mother Sunday from Jones himself
Ernestine Domke, jailed in Melrose Park, faces murder charges with her husband Herman Domke and her son Robert Renke involved. The son says his mother asked him to help drown the stepfather by taking him out in a boat on the lake.
A Texas House resolution directs Texas congressional members to press federal authorities for an investigation into Max Stuart a Texan and Confederate veteran jailed in Mexico for two years. He is accused of killing a Mexican policeman and says his trial was unfair. Stuart’s supporters requested presidential intervention previously without result.

In CANEA April 7 Rear Admiral R H Harris of the British fleet was shot at while crossing a field near Suda. The bullet plowed the grass at his feet marking a near escape. Insurgents were the aggressors in multiple island conflicts with cannon captured at Kissamo during yesterday's actions.
Constantinople dispatch reports the Porte has notified the powers it will withdraw the Crete garrison immediately if the Greeks withdraw first and the powers guarantee pacification of the island.
At Candia Crete on April 7 insurgents advancing from four points attacked Turkish outposts. Turkish forces held their positions but suffered two men killed and eleven wounded.
April 7 Cannea. A fire at Candia near the Cathedral has engulfed several houses. British and Italian troops are demolishing adjacent structures to halt the blaze.
London reports social reformer Mrs. Ormiston Chant and six nurses will depart for Crete tomorrow to assist in relief work funded by Lady Henry Somerset and Boston impresario B. F. Keith.
Rome reports a semi official denial that Admiral Canevaro has resigned or been recalled from his command of the international squadron in Cretan waters.
London dispatch reports persistent rumors of the Czar visiting Paris for two weeks in disguise and staying at Versailles Fontainebleau or Compi egne. The Czarina reportedly urges the trip for a promised reunion while M Faure is said to visit St Petersburg late July with a relaxed court etiquette during a longer stay.
Pretoria April 7. President Kruger has ordered that his grandson Lieutenant Eloff shall be placed on trial before a court for defaming Queen Victoria. The action comes amid a dispute over comments attributed to Eloff during a period of heightened anti British sentiment.
BUCHAREST April 7 The Roumanian Cabinet has resigned in Bucharest signaling a political shift as the government steps down amid ongoing postwar turmoil.

Fred Bender of Marion blew himself up in Weber's stoneyard after threatening Pauline West who refused to marry him. Justice John Hause married eight couples in rapid ceremony. The pairs include W. B. Hoke with Mollie Stout, Marion Barker with Josephine Mason, William Landers with Mattie Hutchinson of Jefferson County Kentucky, and Dr. J. E. Johnson of Lebanon Junction Kentucky with Melissa Wise of Colesburg Kentucky. The Wise couple hail from affluent families.
