Rebels open fire in Dagupan wounding a United States officer. The incident marks the first attack in a tense standoff as authorities pursue suspects. Local troops respond with measures to secure the area and prevent further clashes.
News from Manila on April 6 to 10:45 a.m. says General Lina may have replaced Aguinaldo as leader of the insurgents and that Dagupan, northern terminus of the Manila-Luzon railroad, faced bombardment after rebels fired on a U S officer when a Charleston boat landed.
Manila reports rumors that General Antonio Luna, head of Filipino forces, has supplanted Aguinaldo in guiding affairs. The Philippine Commission proclamation circulated widely in English Spanish and Tagalog, drawing mixed reactions from Manila merchants bankers and editors.
Casualties tally from February 4 to April 4 1899 reports 184 killed 976 wounded total 1160 as sent to the Adjutant General.

Democrats gain in localities and Socialists show strong urban support. Governor results cite Dyer 16812 Green 9982 Herrick 127 Peckham 104 across 80 of 104 districts.
Christina Fisher aged 103 died in Steubenville Ohio after two months of declining health. Born May 11 1796 near Connellsville Pennsylvania she married Thomas Fisher in 1812 and worked in the first local pottery. Four of eight children survive along with many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She had been a widow sixty two years and a church member eighty six years. She recalled pioneer days and the first boat launch she witnessed.
In Wapakoneta Ohio on April 5 the grand jury was discharged without indicting or hearing a witness. Since the previous session no one has been bound over to court no magistrate complaint has been filed and the prosecutor cannot find a single criminal in the county.
The steamer St Joseph broke her shaft and blew out both cylinder heads at 5 am near Ford's Landing ten miles below Vicksburg. A deck passenger, a colored woman, jumped into the river in panic and drowned. No other injuries reported. Loss estimated around $3000.
Timothy Brosnahan, dying from a pistol wound inflicted by his son John during a family quarrel, told the boy to escape trouble as best he could. The elder man offered comfort and blamed himself, and his wife, recently divorced from him, cried in the hall as John was arrested. Brosnahan died at German Hospital that evening.
Patrick J. Hanifin, a veteran Nashville detective, was shot dead in his office by Thomas A. Johnson. Johnson claimed self defense after Hanifin allegedly attacked him. two gunshots followed one initial report. The inquest verdict deemed the killing wilful and malicious with no provocation.
The mutilated body of Joe Cheung, a Christian Chinese man, was found under an oil tank on Gratiot Street. A note in Chinese and an empty opium pot nearby point to Highbinders. A cousin said Cheung had been pursued for a year, moving from New Orleans to San Francisco, then to St Louis.
Washington April 5 Vice President Hobart's condition remains steady since last night though not as strong. At his residence officials say there is no cause for alarm and the illness is mainly acute indigestion with no signs of serious complications.
Yale chemist Prof Russell H Chittenden reported the canned roast beef was generally good though fat tended to separate in cans and some samples showed signs of moisture and decomposition after exposure. Dr Samuel A Currie testified on tainted refrigerator beef and salicylic acid preservative use by meat firms.
In Chillicothe a riot breaks out as 25 inmates of the Missouri College of Girls Industrial Home flee armed with knives. Police and citizens clash with the rebels in town, six remain at large as officers finally disarm the others. The uprising follows claims of starvation and abuse under Superintendent Miss Clark, to be replaced by Mrs. Debolt of Trenton.

Special Dispatch reports Ross Hale drowned while trying to swim the Poca River near Sissonsville to reach his ailing father. The river was high and no one could take a boat to him. His body was found about a mile downstream, with the hat of his mill at Sissonsville indicating his fate.
Daisy Sprague the glove shop bookkeeper at the penitentiary resigns after a third escape attempt by her convict admirer Otis Hurley who stabbed her months ago. Hurley was recaptured and returned to solitary confinement. Sprague cites fear and danger in her resignation.
In Canton Ohio on April 5 the Mrs. George trial reached a jury pool of eleven men. The State exhausted two peremptory challenges and the defense still wields sixteen as jury selection continues. Secret agents and investigators are questioned as prosecutors seek to gauge views on capital punishment and circumstantial evidence.
Dr Gideon J Stivers once a leading Louisville dentist died by suicide after a publicized cruelty case against his wife. The Humane Society probe damaged his fortune and practice. He later moved to the country, returned to work as a bookkeeper, and after a self inflicted carbolic acid incident disappeared before his body floated in the river.
In Coffeyville Kansas on April 5 a daughter of Captain D B Elliott of the Twentieth Kansas Regiment who was killed at Manila recently was elected City Clerk without opposition. Her name appeared on both political tickets.
The War Department may act after 150 Rock Island Arsenal workers at Davenport Ia failed to report for duty. Acting Secretary Meiklejohn has not been officially informed yet, but press reports prompt potential action tomorrow. The dispute follows a reclassification order that cut wages and spurred past protests.
A mass meeting of Chattanooga's prominent ladies led to a protest against changing the city’s late night saloon closing. Two hundred women marched to the City Council, singing hymns, and the council retained the 10 pm to 5 am closing hours.
