Rural Heritage Days brings eight hours of fun to Thunder Bay area

Organizers of Rural Heritage Days at the Highway 130 and Piper Road site urge spectators to bring cash as no ATMs are on site. Leo Blekkenhorst, president of Rural Heritage Agricultural Society, says the event runs 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with up to 1,000 spectators and features the Slate River Plowing Match and 1920s grain processing equipment. Entry is 10 dollars per vehicle.

Jobless rate rises slightly in Canada amid slowdown

Canada’s unemployment rate edged up to 6.6 percent in August as the economy added 22,000 jobs. Thunder Bay’s rate rose to 3.7 percent from 3.0. Wages climbed 5.0 percent year over year to $35.16, with recent immigrants lagging wage gains while established immigrants rose 6.3 percent. Students faced the highest summer unemployment since 2012, at 16.7 percent on average, with Black, Chinese and South Asian students hit hardest. The Bank of Canada signaled more rate cuts as 1.5 million remained unemployed in August, and policy moves target immigration and migrant workers.

Thunder Bay expands Blacksheep trail network with FedNor funds

A $250000 FedNor investment and a $260000 Thunder Bay CEDC grant support the Trowbridge Forest and Shuniah Mines trail expansions. The Blacksheep Mountain Bike Club plans year round use, host Canada Cup this weekend, and grow Thunder Bay as a recognized cycling destination with new gravity and playground areas and 30 km of trails plus five more.
