Ontario jail population surges as 81 percent await trial
Ontario provincial jails ran at 113 percent capacity in 2023 with an average 8,889 inmates, led by Maplehurst 1,188 inmates at 134 percent capacity. Elgin-Middlesex and South West Detention Centres also overcrowded, while most inmates are awaiting trial, fueling staffing stress and safety concerns.
