Small and medium sized businesses can apply for up to 20000 in grants to hire and train first year apprentices in 39 Red Seal trades. The program, run by the federal Apprenticeship Service, offers 5000 per apprentice per year for two Level 1 apprentices, rising to 10000 if the apprentice is from an under represented group. It aims to broaden diversity in construction and manufacturing while supporting hiring during the busy season. The Thunder Bay council composition review committee released survey results showing 72 percent of 660 respondents find council size inappropriate and 52 percent oppose full-time councillors. Fifty-six percent say ward system adds value, 84 percent want ward boundaries reviewed, and about 60 percent support at large councillors and current compensation.
