A North Dakota farmer reports sharp tax increases after the nonpartisan league gained power, saying his farm near Sykeston fell in value and could not secure a loan or sale at the former price. He cites tax jumps from 51.65 in 1915 to 203.90 in the first year under the party and criticizes directed spending on propaganda rather than public improvements. At Power last Saturday evening a large audience heard Senator T. O. Larson and Major L. A. Foot discuss political topics. Treasurer Guthrie was absent, but Larson and Foot delivered inspiring republican talks. Chateau residents included Mrs. Blanche Jacobson and Mrs. Edythe W. Saylor, both republican candidates for district offices, who were introduced to voters and made a favorable impression.
B K Wheeler a Democratic gubernatorial candidate spoke at the court house on Tuesday afternoon denouncing nonpartisan leaders as socialists. He warned voters of plans like state owned mills banks stores and land controls, citing Townley and North Dakota examples and contrasting Montana taxes with North Dakota figures.
Cleveland defeated Brooklyn 3 to 0 at League Park to win the World Series in five games. Pitcher Ves Coveleski delivered the decisive third game as the Indians finished atop the National League champions and clinched the championship before about 26,000 cheering fans.
High school notes report a growing football program with a home game set for October 28 against Hobson, coach Sweat preparing a lineup after a Tuesday scrimmage, and town business leaders planning to attend.
