Roger Burrell writes from the French front in October 1917 describing shelling near hills, fear and courage among troops, daily duties of 24 hours at the front and three days in villages, sudden calls for cars, and longing for letters from home while noting mail as vital and comrades marrying.
Word reached Chateau of the death of Mrs. Jacob Schmidt formerly a local resident who had lived with her son near Browning in recent years. Survived by two sons Carl and George Schmidt of Browning and a daughter Mrs J W Kerr of Farmington. She was well known inCho tea and among old timers.
Notice asks knitters to submit warm garments for soldiers in France by November 15 as cold weather approaches. Also reports a marriage license issued in Great Falls to Geo C Blythe of Conrad and Emma Rowland of Bynum.
Report shows towns in Teton County subscribed generously to the Second Liberty Loan, with railways not contributing as promised. County expected to exceed the state allotment of 535,000 dollars. T. O. Larson, chairman, thanks residents for their spirited support and the committee’s hard work.
Funeral held at the Farmington Norwegian church on Thursday November 11 for Jacob L. Otness age 79 years 10 months 3 days. He was born in Osterdalen Norway December 25 1837 and died October 29 1917 in Conrad hospital. He leaves eight children 28 grandchildren six great grandchildren and many relatives with a large local attendance.
The November meeting includes a program with Glee Club performances and a Star Spangled Banner. An emergency committee chaired by Mrs. E. B. Haugen and others will collect clean outgrown clothing for Chateau area children and use proceeds to buy mittens and overshoes if needed.
