Washington March 28 The senate finance committee plans a conference with President Harding as the first step in handling the compromise soldiers bonus bill passed by the house last week. Some members seek a clear view of what measure will satisfy the executive and Fordney bill is seen by some as a possible solution.
Washington a March 27 The senate debated a new way out of the four power treaty tangle with administration leaders proposing to restate the informal declaration in the ratifying resolution opponents calling it inadequate. Senator Lodge Massachusetts urged including the informal declaration as a reservation while Simmons and Walsh argued it is a treaty level understanding. The vote 20 to 58 refused an amendment to exclude Sakhalin from the four power agreement.
Mr and Mrs F M Kaupish of Pendroy were in Choteau on Thursday. They drove in and noted the road between Bynum and Choteau in fairly good shape given the snow.
Jos. I. Liberty returned Wednesday from central Washington where he had been for two weeks in the interests of the Choteau Oil & Gas Co.
In the Third Maine district the Republican candidate Nelson won about two thirds of the vote amid snowbound roads and a light turnout. The campaign involved national and district Republican committees and emphasized the tariff law and Washington conference treaties as signs of improving conditions and party prospects for 1922.
The sophomore dance is scheduled for Friday night. Mr Williamson acts as class sponsor during Miss Medley’s absence. Commercial class typewriting certificates were awarded. Farm shop students perform practical Ford car repairs. Agricultural class makes cheese and plans to hatch chickens this spring with one incubator set and about five more planned. A son was born to Mrs Oren R Nelson on Friday March 24.
Helena March 27 More than 90 percent of Montana sheep raisers were broke before year end says T A Marlow Helena banker. He urged the state board of equilization to cut the proposed sheep assessment to 6 per head noting federal funds of 10 5 million loaned on livestock up to March 17 with 2 9 million loaned on over 500 000 sheep.

Washington reports the arms conference naval treaty and the gas and submarine pacts were ratified by the senate. The naval pact passed 74 to 1 with Senator France the sole negative vote. gas and submarine treaty was approved 71 to 0. Senator Wadsworth condemned gas provisions but did not vote. Debate on the Far Eastern treaty to begin tomorrow faces opposition over China protections.
Petitions nominating candidates for mayor and councilmen, subject to voters on Monday April 3, filed with the city clerk. Under an Enforcement Ticket Sk N Haugen merchant filed for mayor. Jas T Robison abstractor for alderman first ward. Dr FT Batman alderman second ward. Under Republican ticket Geo Coffey Jr lawyer filed for mayor and W T Logan alderman first ward. Mort Hirshberg Fairfield merchant was a Choteau visitor Tuesday.
The seed grain loan passed by Congress and signed by President Harding will start early next week. County agent Robert Clarkson says applications will arrive Saturday or Monday and farmers should apply promptly. Rules limit loans to 1.50 per acre, 300 per farmer, only for seed, and bar loans to those producing more than 5 bushels per acre last year with preference to farming families and best farmers. Violations carry up to 1000 fine and six months imprisonment.
W. H. Webb resumes duties as county clerk and recorder following a short illness, signaling a full return to work and continuation of county administration.
Frank McCabe was hurt last Friday when a snow plow he operated struck an obstruction and ran over him. The injury, while painful, is not serious and he is recovering well.
The Beaupne Cafe will open Sunday April 22 under manager J M Weaver. He has spent days cleaning the building and contents and promises a good dinner for 50 cents on opening day. An eight piece orchestra will perform from noon to eight.
A Choteau group collected names this week to start a local Pythian Sisters order and already exceeds the required number, signaling the formation of the new chapter.
