The Helena Record discusses how a future preparedness bill might pass Congress with Republican help but face Democratic opposition and possible inadequacy. It cites Wilson’s shifting positions from 1914 to 1916 on national defense and army reorganization, noting clashes with supporters of guard federalization.
Thirty thousand entries were filed in Montana last year with 1 964 in the Billings land office. Original entries covered 4 065 439 acres and final entries 2 358 655 acres. Total acreage patented reached 8 994 418. Other offices listed include Lewistown Haynes Miles City Glasgow Great Falls Helena Bozeman Missoula Kalispell.
Ira Holbrook died Wednesday at Choteau hospital after a year of poor health and long hospital stays in Choteau and Conrad. He had worked for E A Savory on a Dupuyer ranch and was known for generosity to friends. Interment will be in Choteau cemetery tomorrow afternoon. The Choteau Rod and Gun Club meets Tuesday March 7 1916 for officer elections and other business.
Washington reports the Democratic Party in Congress is demoralized and negligent. The piece claims Democrats tally fewer floor members than Republicans daily, with a 228 to 197 party split and repeated absences. It accuses the Democrats of inept legislating and divided leadership.
A unique Co-Operators Congress for farmers will meet in Great Falls from March 6 to March 8. Three days will feature addresses and discussions on the main problems facing Montana ranchers, with program organizers in charge.

J R Edgehill bought the Selway sheep company wool clip today for just over 31 cents a pound, the highest price in southern Montana. His Boston firm has purchased over 250000 pounds of Beaverhead wool with an average above 31 cents, signaling optimism for Montana wool prospects this year.
Since the last report James Gibson, clerk of the district court, issued licenses to Irven Stanfield, 24, and Jennie A. Henderson, 26, both of Kalme.
The Sunday school contest among Choteau Conrad Cut Bank and Valier opens with 229 attendees in Choteau, a 60 percent rise over Nov Jan averages. Each town will host ten Sundays ending Easter with weekly reports to track progress and foster countywide moral and social gains.
In Madison Wisconsin Senator Robert M La Follette declared his bid for the Republican presidential nomination at the 1916 Chicago convention. He called for arms embargo war munitions manufacture social service in peacetime and international conference to end hostilities. An 11 member executive committee was named to run the Wisconsin Wisconsin North Dakota delegate drive.
A campaign headquarters for Montana prohibition work is likely to open in Helena in coming days. Leaders in Helena plan a statewide push with newspaper publicity and national speakers. Attending the conference are Senator J B Annin of Stillwater and Rev Joseph Pope Montana Anti Saloon league superintendent.
