Larson Named Acting Governor in Montana

Senator T O Larson of Choteau Teton county is acting governor during the temporary absence of Governor Stewart and Lieutenant Governor McDowell. He says pardons will not be considered and notes favorable conditions in Peton county with plans for large land sales and record seed acreage in the county.

Death of Frank O. Elkins at Choteau Hospital

Frank O. Elkins died Monday December 9 at Choteau hospital after a short influenza illness. He is buried in Choteau cemetery with Odd Fellows services. Born December 12, 1882 in Atlanta Kansas he moved to Montana in 1913 and homesteaded 13 miles east of Choteau. He was married with three children. He was known as a kind husband and father and respected by neighbors.

Letter from Choteau Montanan describes soldier’s eight days on front

In a personal letter dated November 25 1948 from Choteau Montana Carrie V Spencer relays Walter Verge’s wartime experiences. He led his battalion through eight days of continuous fighting on the Champagne front returning to base hospital then field hospital before Orleans. He survived bullet grazes shrapnel wounds and gas exposure while recounting an account of a machine gun nest capture and a missing pack leading to rumors of his death.

Mooney Strikes Called Off for Labor Congress Meet

In San Francisco December 9 the International Worker's Defense League said nationwide strikes against the Mooney conviction are postponed until January 14 in Chicago when a special labor congress will review all aspects of the case. The league reported unions agreed to delay action pending the congress.

Montana Contingent Leaves Boulder After Influenza Losses

The Montana contingent of 225 men at the University of Colorado army technical school departed Boulder at 3 45 pm on a special train to Billings. They received honorable discharges from U S service. Twelve deaths occurred during their three month stay due to influenza problems.

State loan funds low delay farm loan receipts

The state land office reports farm loan applications greatly exceed available funds. At current rates it could take five or six months before applicants receive cash. Sidney Miller, register, says funds on hand are about $1,000,000 less than the total applications.
