West's first manufacturing plant was a Yellowstone whiskey distillery
Nearly eighty five years ago a whiskey distillery near the Yellowstone Yellowstone Missouri junction operated for less than a year. Kenneth MacKenzie of the American Fur Company opened the plant to supply liquor for trade with plains tribes, aiming to beat government liquor bans and support fur commerce. The operation moved up the Missouri, endured confiscations at Fort Leavenworth, and continued near the Montana Dakota line to bolster trading.
