Chicago reports cattle receipts around 19 000 with slow steady trade. Beeves range 2.65 to 6.30, Texas fed steers 9.35 to 34.50, sheep receipts about 35 000 with lambs 4.25 to 7.60 and sheep 3.50 to 4.30, markets slightly lower for sheep.
The district court case of Armedia S. Clark v A L Hoy H B Belcher W D Jones M Thes Manix B H Ganong R D Anderson B P Knowlton and Dennis Holland has the defendants filing an answer. They deny plaintiff fulfilled contract conditions and allege failure to fence the Dry Forks range causing cattle to stray. They claim damages of 450 for lost cattle and related roundup expenses.
In Philadelphia on September 18 the eighty first communication of the sovereign grand lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows began amid poor weather. The Lulu temple proved crowded and inadequate. Report figures show 1,217,185 subordinate lodge members 171,039 encampment members 474,059 Rebekah members 14,315 lodges. Expenditures for relief reach 4,633,649 with total revenues 412,638 721 and resources 37,545,071. Grand Secretary Goodwin notes 114,210 candidates initiated 65,255 suspended and 15,035 died. Since 1830 the order has initiated 2,927,263 candidates and 292,541 members have died. The care of orphans and aged is aided by 30 institutions.
Washington reports the annual patents figures for the year ended June 30 with 30,266 patents granted including reissues and designs. Receipts total 1,737,344 while expenditures reach 1,472,467 and the surplus is turned into the treasury. The year is described as the largest for any single year.
The contest among Yellowstone Gallatin Flathead Missoula Cascade Teton Meagher Fergus and Bradwater counties for the flat premium in the agricultural division at the State Fair October 2 and 3 draws intense interest. Counties have expanded space and the agricultural building promises the greatest product display yet in the Northwest.
Fergus Gold Mining company with John A. Drake as a heavy stockholder made the first payment to James Fergus heirs on a deal valued near 1 000 000 for undeveloped cyanide property near Kendall. Drake has prospecting results showing a blanket of rich ore reminiscent of the Rand district.
County treasurer J E Webb reports to county superintendent Rebecca Acton that the district accounts show Belleview at 27.53 dollars and another district at 14.94 dollars. The Dupuyer district also holds a library fund of 14.28 dollars.
Receiver J W Speer sold 2 694 old sheep at 1S2 75 each and 1 098 lambs at 52 65 in Galata to John Willis of Glasgow. Remaining stock farming implements and movables to be auctioned at the ranch on September 30, according to the Great Falls Leader.
Government census shows Montana leading the nation in sheep and range horses. Montana reports 256,000 horses valued at 38.37 per head, followed by Washington 225,000 and Colorado 210,000 with Oregon 215,000, New Mexico 112,000, and Idaho 145,000 horses across the region.
Boston September 19 dealers report a steady wool market with strong demand in fleece wools. Sales proceed at firm quotations and no sign of weakening in prices. principal activity centers in the western territories and buyers show ease in placing orders.

A historical draft lists daily events at Cascade County Fair from Monday September 24 to Thursday September 28. It includes half mile dashes for boys and girls under 16, Soldiers Cossack hurdle races, Farmers relay, Soldiers Roman race, rough riding contests, mule packing, driving races, and various Ladies and Parmers relay races with prize notes and irregular OCR text.
Aberdeen S C reports Rein-in the Face, once linked to the Custer massacre and said to have killed General Custer, died at Standing Rock Reservation in South Dakota on September 22 at age 62.
Telegraph messages to be sent by telegraph along the Neihart branch and the M G N road after orders from St Paul. Montana Central had used telephone for about a year. Telephone instruments on the M G N are removed and being replaced with tickers while linemen reinstall the telegraph system along the Neihart line.
Karlstad correspondent reports Swedish commissioners ready to join Norwegian efforts for parallel arbitration and fort demolition terms. Details on fortress removal have been discussed, and there is cautious optimism for a swift, satisfactory resolution.
The Montana State Fair at Helena on October 27 offers one fare for the round trip from October 1 to 4. Pass covers and tickets will be valid for travel to and from the fair. This low rate is unique in state history and is expected to boost attendance. The Acantha subscription is 2.00 per year.
The Montana Educator notes Dillon opens a new paper and reports on local schools with 93 pupils, 500 teacher shortage in town, and many Montana county superintendents being women. It praises the Bynum building expansion, heating during cold weather, and progress toward adopting the state course of study.
J E E O Hara reports from the Swift Current oil fields that development is rapid and encouraging. The Sherburne well shows oil at 270 feet with a 60 foot rise since discovery, now capped and awaiting equipment to begin pumping. O Hara notes capitalists have invested recently and multiple wells may be active before year’s start.
The forest service adopts a standard uniform for about 600 rangers on reserves. Uniform cloth is neutral green like army cloth. Flannel shirts, gray felt hats, black riding boots, and a double breasted overcoat are specified. A special button with an embossed tree sits between the words Forest and Service. Rangers must buy the uniforms themselves.
