Montana Stockgrowers Cite School Finance Details
The Montana Stockgrowers Association reports that for fiscal year 1960-61 Montana public schools budgeted and spent 79 million dollars. Of this, 54 million went to the general fund for operations and maintenance, with 25 million for bond redemption transportation retirement lunch tuition and miscellaneous items. The general fund is supported by property taxes via the foundation program permissive increases and voted levies, while state and federal funds cover 30 percent. State equalization funds rely on need and a 25 mill basic levy, and the I and I fund and other sources contribute smaller shares. Federal funds accounted for about 3.6 percent of total school funding, with local sources dominating overall. Community notes mention local visits and social visits in Choteau and nearby towns.
