Freight Lines MRC Bid Reviewed at Chamber Meeting

Chateau Chamber of Commerce president Walter Henneford reported on the Montana Railroad Commission hearing about Helfry Freight Lines seeking a Browning to Great Falls freight permit. Promoters say direct service would speed shipments, reduce damage claims, and save days for West Coast, Minneapolis, and Chicago freight. The chamber will study publicity plans and return with recommendations.

Governor Names Joyce Robinson to Head County Mental Health Group

Governor appoints Joyce Robinson to head Teton County’s mental health committee. She selects a broad slate including Mrs. Dellwo, Mrs. Myers, Elmer Erickson, William Olsen, Clifford Hughes and others to promote Referenda 57 and 58. The measures seek 3.5 million dollars for the State Training School at Boulder and the Warm Springs Mental Hospital with a 20 year funding period, no new taxes due to a mill levy.

Pioneer Mary Buzzell Dies in Conrad at 87

Mary Buzzell 87 widow of early Methodist minister Rev Frank L Buzzell died Friday in a Conrad hospital. Funeral held Monday in Conrad. She aided local church and women’s groups and was adopted as Princess Eagle Feathers by the Blackfoot in 1941.

Law enforcement across Montana sought G H Heiser 31 Donald Smith 36 and Violy Grinsteiner Heiser 27 after their Sunday jailbreak from Teton county jail. They opened three other doors with a bar and screwdriver and fled toward Fairfield then Great Falls before being captured. They pleaded guilty and were jailed, with prior records noted for Smith and Heiser.

Conrad Cowboys Top Choteau Bulldogs 20 to 12 on Local Grid

The Conrad Cowboys overcame a 12 point halftime deficit to beat the Choteau Bulldogs 20 to 12. Wally Chern scored for Choteau, Jim Lohse added a late second quarter TD, Squiit Mason and Duane Egan delivered Conrad scores, and Watkins sealed it with a late interception return. Dr Anna Smith Dies in Denver After Long Life

Dr Anna Bel Smith aged 66 of Great Falls died in a Denver hospital after a life that spanned Nebraska to Chateau and Wilmington. She taught school before marrying Fred Smith in 1921, later becoming a chiropractor. Survived by son-in-law and daughter Donald and, three semeniaen, and a sister in Nebraska.

Chateau grade school will extend conferences for kindergarten and the first three grades during Oct 11 to Oct 22, with daily dismissal at 3:00 pm. Welfare Supervisor Attends Montana Social Welfare Conference

Shanley, the Glacier county welfare supervisor, attended the Montana Conference of Social Welfare in Butte last week. The eleventh annual convention began in the Mining City Friday morning with Rev. Rolf A. Norman named president. Norman has preached at Trinity Lutheran in Choteau and Bethany Lutheran in Dutton. Shanley returned to Choteau Sunday and will soon assume his new welfare supervisor post.

Dryman Murder Case Taken Under Advisement

The Montana Supreme Court has taken under advisement a motion in the murder trial of Frank R. Dryman of Vallejo California. The case concerns whether venue should be moved from Toole County to a nonadjacent county. Dryman was convicted and sentenced to hang twice for the 1951 murder of Four Corners cafe owner Clarence Pellett. appeals have so far saved him from execution.
