Soldier Harry Van DeRiet writes from Sunny France about arriving in France, living in billets, and daily life near Chateau Montana. He notes French villages, castlelike buildings, a simple room with friends, and his hopes for future fighting against the Boche. He mentions mail delays, U.S. destroyers, and the German subs.
Notices sent ten days ago urge subscribers to respond immediately to a new cash in advance ruling. The message warns of possible loss of subscribers and stresses compliance by November to avoid business disruption.
Red Cross notes appoint Mrs C J Smith as chairman of nursing service. Immanuel Ladies Aid reports 148.63 from an auction sale and supper on September 21. Clieve ladies donate 25 pairs of socks. Proceeds checks from the acre pledges arrive from N J Landsverk and others. Porter Junior Red Cross sends a handmade quilt with names, plus socks and handkerchiefs. Bond week at public schools urges children to raise funds for Liberty Bonds.
The Local Board reports that several limited service men were sent to Jefferson Barracks Missouri today including Gillan Seff Anderson Warberg Heun Pederson Puff Mier and others. A second group will be sent to Vancouver Barracks starting October 14 including Victor Puff Mier Andersores Imittepolis Miril and Ray Edgar Swenson Tockwood Herring Sylvester Treary Gaines Thompson Gustave Ralph McDonough Anderson Urich Kalma. Returns from the Blackfeet reservation show 250 registered for military service as the board continues classifying registrants.
Helena reports Colonel J. J. McGuinness recalls that the 163rd infantry of Montana arrived in France late 1917 and New Year's Day 1918. By March every private had been reassigned to other units, with only a fraction remaining. The regiment, a replacement unit of the 41st division, sees rapid turnover as men go out and new ones come in from depots. McGuinness notes ongoing deliveries of aircraft, machine guns and tanks and predicts the war may end next summer with U S forces advancing.
A New York girl Frances Fairchild posed with a vast image of the Statue of Liberty for the Fourth Liberty Loan drive. The image evokes the emotions of American soldiers returning from France and emphasizes Liberty as a guiding symbol in wartime.
District Judge H H Ewing and Court Reporter Silk arrived from Great Falls to convene the district court. Final naturalization papers issued include Alexander Robson, Augustus Moses White, Ole Christian Augestad, Richard Delacy, Harry Lee Garber, Anna Greenli, Rudolph C Breiman, Lewis A Eaton, John Jensen, William Kooyman, James Logan, Edward Delacy, Cornelius Vanden Bos, Patrick Daniel Sands, Theophiel Beelaert, Olaf Wield. State v Wm Cobbell: defendant pleads not guilty, bail set at 750. State v Peter P Ronning: guilty on grand larceny, sentenced to state penitentiary 2-4 years, suspended, probation. State v Wm E Cowan: burglary, not guilty, released on own recognizance. State v H H Elliott: assault in the second degree, not guilty, bail 750. Lida M Corwin v Geo D Corwin custody case heard, decision advised.
Tomorrow evening the first lyceum course number will be held at the high school with a lecture by Mr. O. D. McKeever. Tickets are being sold by high school students under the Commercial Club. Also noted are Mr. Ogaard’s agriculture class lecture, senior James Whitacre leaving for Missoula training camp, Miss People visiting the demonstration school, Clarence Jacobson returning to class, the start of the typewriting course with three machines, and updates on the normal training girls’ classroom assembly area.

Homer Jackson died Tuesday morning at Deaconess hospital in Great Falls from injuries suffered in an automobile accident on Friday September 13. He was born in 1871 in Waterville Minnesota and worked as postmaster at Fessenden North Dakota before building hotels in Scott Saskatchewan and Montana. Survived by wife, son Norman, his parents and five brothers in Montana and elsewhere.
A burglary at Power last Thursday netted about 550 dollars. Sheriff Innes arrested George Stopper known as Big George, then John Dunbar and later Rade Maumuzie after a search found cash and property. Bail set at 750 dollars for Stopper and Dunbar, 200 dollars for Maumuzie. Dunbar and Maumuzie posted bail.
