Montana Farmers Union President Gordon Arges urged backing House Bill No. 13787 the Melcher Bill at the Ton County Farmers Union meeting in Chateau Saturday. The measure would extend 1985 farm programs, strengthen feed grain and wheat supports, and create export certificates with parity.
Capt. John Heath of the Montana Highway Patrol told Chateau Lions Club members last week that 99 percent of accidents are driver caused. He argued for daytime speed limits, driver tests every four years, and promoted the Defensive Driving program. Heath cited alcohol and speed as major factors and urged contact with legislators. Pins awarded to club members capped a meeting focused on safety and cooperation.
Sadie Jean Baquet 82 died at Pondera Pioneer Home Conrad on Sept 26. Born Unionville Missouri May 28 1887 she married Clyde Baquet at Billings Aug 12 1914 and moved with him to Collins Montana. She taught in Missouri before substituting at Collins and helped organize the Collins Sunday School. Funeral Sept 30 Brady Methodist Church. burial Sunset Memorial Gardens Great Falls. Survivors include husband daughter Mildred Schlepp Conrad son Eugene Dutton seven grandchildren two great grandchildren three brothers and five sisters.
The Chateau Chamber of Commerce plans its annual talent show Chamber Capers for Saturday November 22. Organizer Tom McCartney invites singers dancers and instrumentalists to audition for the home style event and seize a potential big break.
The Choteau Lions Club announces its Fall Festival at the city park pavilion starting 7 p.m. This year introduces 16 new games provided by Fun Services of Great Falls with candy-striped stands. Prizes include five $10 door drawings. attendance requires a ticket, with no admission charge.
The State Board of Health found 29 deficiencies at Teton Memorial Hospital after an August 1 Medicare survey. Critics cited disorganized nursing, dietary maintenance gaps, drug storage rules, sterilized equipment storage, and medical record reorganization. The hospital plans corrections with Lutheran Hospitals and Homes Society.
The Skyline Lodge retirement center in Teton County nears completion as directors hire a Great Falls architectural firm and a consultant. To obtain construction loan approval at least 75 residents must apply, with a public meeting set for Oct. 13 at 7 30 p m at Chateau United Methodist Church where Gene Todd and George Paige will present plans. Over half of the required residents have already applied on a first come first served basis.
Dr Leslie Chalmers resumes duties at Eastern Montana College Billings after summer on his Farmington area farm. He leads toward an Economic Development Center and continues rural Montana research to aid local growth with data driven policy making and use of natural advantages.
Members of the American Legion Chateau heard three speakers Charles L. Michael Earle Angell and Dick Perry discuss bringing Vietnam era veterans into the Legion. They noted eligibility for service from August 5 1964 through the end of the Vietnam conflict.
The Teton County Women s Democrat Club will hold a luncheon at the Cornell Hotel in Chateau on Monday October 6 at 12 noon. Riley Childers will speak on REA versus Montana Power and all are invited.
Fire Chief Art Anderson announces Chateau Fire Department will call on downtown businesses over the next two weeks to inspect for fire hazards. Merchants are urged to cooperate. homeowners may contact Anderson for home inspections. All firefighters should attend the next practice Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Dr Porter S Cannon will open an office on Main Avenue beside the Cornell Hotel in Chateau next week after remodeling delays. Born in Lincoln Nebraska he earned his medical degree at the University of Nebraska and served three years in the Army Medical Corps. He practiced in Conrad from 1940 to 1967 and later in Yellowstone National Park before relocating. He is Montana Medical Association fellow and ex member of the State Board of Medical Examiners.
Choteau High School English teacher Daryl Sande and librarian will discuss his Peace Corps service in Biafra from 1966 to 1969 at Choteau United Methodist Church on Tuesday October 7 at 7 30 p m A post lecture coffee hour and a donation plate for a Biafran relief fund will follow A male adult chorus directed by Lloyd Reynolds will perform a special number during the program.
The Teton County Democrats will hold their biennial meeting next Monday at 8 pm in the Teton County courthouse. Henry McDunn, chairman of the Teton Democratic Central Committee, called for the meeting to elect officers for the next two years and a regular business session will also be held.
The Teton County Farm Bureau will hold its annual meeting this Sunday Oct 5 at the Moose hall in Choteau. The event starts at 1 30 PM with a potluck turkey dinner followed by a business meeting and officer elections. Joe Krall of Sunburst will be featured speaker on Montana Agriculture Research Corporation.
About 200 people attended a showing of the 1970 Ski-Doo snowmobiles at the Villager in Choteau last Saturday. Door prizes went to Keith Van Setten and Doug Forrest of Choteau, Dennis Maurer of Dutton, and Mrs. Art Mitchell of Choteau. Sponsors Harold Yeager and Ben Hoge of Teton Ski-Doo Sales organized the event to showcase the new models, accessories, and clothing.
The Choteau Bulldogs erased a 16-0 deficit at Chinook to upset the Sugarbeeters 28-22 and stay alive for the Class B Conference crown. Casey Bilbro sparked a 90 yard kickoff return and a late fourth quarter drive capped by a Kelly to Martin pass for the decisive score. Snyder sealed the win with an interception in the final seconds.
