Fort C F Smith on Big Horn River Frontier
Fort C F Smith arose on the Big Horn river in Montana as one of the first federal posts. Carrington organized the site from Fort Phil Kearny patrols to protect Bozeman trail travelers amid Red Cloud and Northern Cheyenne opposition. The hayfield battle of August 1 1867 and subsequent abandonments marked the post’s grim frontier legacy.
