The 1956 Northern Division Class B basketball tournament will be held Feb 23–25 at Conrad High School gym. Conrad won the bid over Chateau with S. O. Hefty named tournament manager. The division splits with a Malta-hosted North Central tourney featuring Fairfield Chinook Fort Benton Harlem Havre Central and Malta. October road deaths set a new Montana record
Helena Montana State Police report October 42 highway deaths the highest monthly toll in state history. Twenty four fatal crashes claimed 42 lives surpassing July 1952 record of 37. Authorities note at least 15 of 94 fatal accidents involved drinking drivers and cite inattention misjudgment as major factors.

Nurse Flown After Truck Crash Near Fairfield
Mary Beth Smith, 24, a Columbus nurse, was injured when a cattle truck driven by Bob Nelson, Belt, overturned five miles north of Fairfield. Montana Game Warden Don Brown flew her to Great Falls, summoned ambulance, and Nelson received a citation for failure to observe basic rules. Smith suffered a fractured right wrist and two cattle were shot due to injuries.
