One Mail Delivery Now at Postoffice

The Choteau post office will receive a single daily mail from Great Falls at 9 30 each morning and dispatch from Choteau to Pendroy and Bynum. The 1 30 pm outgoing mail leaves for Great Falls. Congress raises taxes and boosts civil service pay

The new measures raise personal and corporate income taxes and levies on cigarettes beer liquor and gasoline while postal rates rise and 1 100 000 civil service workers receive a 10 percent pay hike with a minimum of 400 a year. Most changes take effect later. withholdings rise immediately and a revised tax table is in use.

Rites Held for Shell Billings Noted Montana Sheriff

Shell Billings 70 longtime Montana peace officer died Sunday after a three month illness from a brain tumor in Billings. Funeral at Chateau Methodist Church with burial in Choteau. He served 25 years in law enforcement, including as sheriff of the split Teton Pondera counties and later as supervisor of law and order on the Blackfoot reservation. He was born in Wisconsin in 1881 and moved to Montana in 1912.

Draft Board Will Induct On Wednesday

The Teton county selective service board resumes induction of registrants with seven men to be inducted on Wednesday November 7. Inductees include Albert Blakeer Jacob Black from Dutton Harry Thorn from Chateau Arnold Hanson from Pendrey Alfred Menghini from Power and Charles Austed Ted Hanberg from Airfield. New amendments add class 1-O and 1-V classifications for conscientious objectors performing civilian work for national health safety or interest.

Saunders Wheat Variety Trails Show Slight Yield Gap

County Extension Agent Raymond Kelly reports from Montana Experiment Stations that the Saunders wheat variety yielded about 2 percent less bushels per acre than Thatcher across three trials. Saunders also runs 2 to 2 percent lower in weight per bushel and matures about two days later at Moccasin branch station.

Chateau Lions Club highlights 25 years of service

The Chateau Lions Club, nearing its 25th anniversary next May, reports 68 members in good standing and a history of continuous activity. Major projects include a swimming pool and tennis court funded at about $1,000 per season, plus blind work and community betterment. Proceeds go to the Civic and Welfare fund for community projects.

Mobile unit to offer free chest X rays in November

Local residents aged 12 and over are urged to get free chest X rays from a mobile unit parked in front of the gas office on November 10 12 and 13. The screenings test for tuberculosis heart and lung disease and are provided by the Montana State Board of Health with the Chateau Chamber of Commerce.
